Hi
I'm pretty new to VideoStudio but I think I'm kind of getting there with all the effects and ways to bring all my videos and photos together.
One thing that is slowing me down is that all my photos and videos are on a Western DIgital NAS box that I can access with fairly decent performance. I want to leave them there as I have them all organised how I want them. I have a 64-bit Windows 7 laptop with 4GB RAM and Intel Core i5 processor and access the NAS box via a Wireless-N connection on the laptop via a Netgear Wireless-N router.
When I add a video or photo I get a lag (more notably the videos) but worse is selecting a video after importing it into a library. It can take a good 10-30 seconds before I can continue using VideoStudio. Is there anyway I can reduce this lag selecting videos or is my only option to copy videos to my laptop?
Thanks for any help
Steve

Re: Slow performance with Photos / Videos on NAS box
Hello sdajacks,
One reason why you have some lag time is because the images are saves on a separate drive and can be access wirelessly. Since VS X4 don't actually copy the photos and create a cache files, it just retrieves them to the location where you saved them and linking them to the video that you are creating/editing.
And yes the best thing to avoid the lag is to just copy the photos on your hard drive or if possible connect your Western DIgital NAS box to your laptop via USB or supported cable connection.

Re: Slow performance with Photos / Videos on NAS box
Thanks for your response. I also found that 200 photos on my NAS box within 1 library also slows performance down chronically as well including performing the basic functions of adding a clip to the timeline.
I'm going to check out performance via USB since I regularly make backups of my NAS to a large USB device. Unfortuantely the Western Digital NAS box can only connect via Ethernet cable as it is designed to be connected via a router and accessed on a network. The USB port is only there for backup or extra storage purposes.
Is Corel looking at creating a library cache for accessing files on remote PCs? I've seen the smart proxy but this seems only for videos whereby a cached version is created if a video is above a specified screen size. Even the smart proxy doesn't seem to help much either in my situation. Can you provide any further advice on smart working with smart proxy?

sdajacks,
Those are really good suggestion or recommendation, let me forward to the correct channel, so that they can take a look at your suggestions. Is Corel looking at creating a library cache for accessing files on remote PCs? Re: Slow performance with Photos / Videos on NAS box
Just to let you know USB drive plugged directly into my laptop has good performance, so it is just access to a NAS box that I am having problems with.
You mention that you will with send this idea of library cache to the powers that be for recommendation. Do you know if there is an area that Corel provide updates where:
1. Ideas are being considered / worked on.
2. Ideas have been noted but not considered at this stage
3. Ideas are not practical without large development.
I own unrelated products and the manufacturer runs forums. These forums have sections where ideas are marked in categories similar to the above and it really helps the user population get a feel that they have some input as to where the prduct upgrades are heading as well as knowing that some improvements are ongoing that will help their way of working with it in future.

How about the Wish List thread?

Re: Slow performance with Photos / Videos on NAS box
I did notice the "wish list" thread but that doesn't specifically show the ideas raised by the user community that are actively being developed by Corel for updates or the next version. Also, ideas that are way off the mark can be identified as well. The wish list is just that: "What us users wish for". It is not "What are Corel doing with user ideas". If you had an "In development / currently being reviewed" section, you would get:
1. Less repeated queries on areas that are not available but under development.
2. Re-assurance that user's ideas are seriously helping the development of VideoStudio.
3. Clarity on the way VideoStudio development is heading.

Re: Slow performance with Photos / Videos on NAS box
Don't hold your breath for any of that ever happening. Your best bet is to put it in the Wish List. That is one area that we know Corel staff does monitor from time to time.It is not "What are Corel doing with user ideas". If you had an "In development / currently being reviewed" section, you would get:
