How do I Recover a Video that Was Saving?
I was saving a 20GB video that was 3 hours long. It was taking a day to finish and during the night, my computer crashed. I opened VideoStudio and it let me recover the project but I don't know how to resume saving the video. I look in the hard drive and found the video and it said it was 0 minutes long what is says when it was saving it. This means that there should be a way to resume saving it. Is there a way to that?

Welcome to the forums,
By saving I'm guessing you mean, rendering/creating your video file from your project. If so just do the same thing that you done before. Go to the Share step, select Create Video file, and proceed on. I would also delete the video file that shows a zero file size. Don't try to over-write it. I found out early on, that unlike documents and photos, over-writing video files, does not work out so well.
You do Save your Project first don't you? I would highly recommend doing a Save on your project often. Several of us use a chronological saving, renaming each save, with a new name, like Vacation 01.vsp, Vacation 02.vsp, Vacation 03.vsp and so on. That way when you experience a crash that corrupts the project file (VSP) that you're working on, you at least have recent one to fall back on.

By saving do you mean you were rendering the video (Share>Create...)?
No, there is no way to resume that if your computer crashed. To me, the most important question here is why the computer crashed. Please read the following so you can see what kind of information we need to help you.

So, I should save the video just like what I did but I already saved it before and already have 10GB of the video finished. I want to resume saving not restarting it from the beginning. I want it so that it can continue off where it left at saving it to my hard drive before the crash. How do do this?Ron P. wrote:Welcome to the forums,

So I guess I'll have to restart saving it then. I'll have to stay up during the night to prevent it from crashing. The computer crashes during the night for no reason. Whenever I turn the monitor off and do nothing. It crashes so I have to be doing something for the computer not to crash.Black Lab wrote:By saving do you mean you were rendering the video (Share>Create...)?

Re: How do I Recover a Video that Was Saving?
Once you're computer crashed, it of course stopped rendering your project, stopped creating that video file. There's no means to resume this process. When you say your computer crashed, do you mean your computer shutdown or just VS crashed, however your PC was still running? In your reply to Jeff, it seems that it is common for your PC to crash. Does it crash with any program that you would leave running, crash with just the operating system running when you close the lid, shutoff the monitor? If this is the case you have a problem with your system, which could be Win7 or hardware related.
Go to the link Jeff provided and post the required information. We don't know what type of video files you're working with, the project settings you may/may not be using. Also if you don't know what CPU you're using, or any other system details are, we provided a link to a free utility that will tell you all of that and then some. It's called Belarc Advisor.

I just crashes randomly. Usually when I'm not doing anything. After is crashed it said there was a problem with my ATI display driver. If I try updating it thoug I get BSOD. And then I have to go back to the previous version.Ron P. wrote:Once you're computer crashed, it of course stopped rendering your project, stopped creating that video file. Re: How do I Recover a Video that Was Saving?
I would suggest figuring out and correcting your computer crashing before you expect a video editing program to not crash. If your computer crashes, and you're doing nothing, I can almost guarantee that you are not going to have much success with video editing, until you get your system stabilized. You may have to start from scratch, reformatting your hard drive, reinstalling your operating system, going through any updates and patches for it. Then re-install your programs, such as VS.

Re: How do I Recover a Video that Was Saving?
I would agree. I think most problems that people have with video editing apps can be attributed to hardware problems/conflicts. And if you are already having problems with your pc you are bound to have (more) problems editing video.

Well my parents aren't going to reinstall my computer again. It should be done editing by 10:00. If I stay on the computer and don't keep the monitor off for a long time. My computer should not crash. Only when I'm not using it is when it crashes.

Hello Danielzxzx,
When you say crash are you getting any error message or it just shut down when your not using the computer.
Because if the computer shuts down when not using it or not in use this is usually a setting in the power option where your computer will either sleep or shuts down when idle or not in use. But the problem is indeed with the computer, I would suggest that you contact the Tech Support of your computer manufacturer, so that they can further investigate on the ATI display driver.

I turn the monitor back on and nothing loads. It just shows a black screen. I press caps lock to see if that works but the light for caps lock does not turn on. I then have to reboot the computer and when it opens it says that windows has recovered from an unexpected error.Abiel Corel NA wrote:Hello Danielzxzx,

Also I don't need to recover the video anymore, I already got it saved on my computer but had to stay up very late to prevent it from crashing.

Re: How do I Recover a Video that Was Saving?
Hi
Your computer will use Power settings, these will be set to turn off after a pre determined time, starting with screen saver, then the monitor, then the processor will shut down.
Using the keyboard/mouse resets this option and the pc continues to run.
However rendering a video may not be sufficient to stop the shutdown.
I would check the Power settings of your pc.
You can usually set a custom option to prevent the pc closing down.
Hopefully this is the cause of your problem.
