Audio Out of Sync on DVD

Post by mitchell65 »

Hello All,
Have been away for longer than I thought I would be but now back with, hopefuly, some time to pick up my video work.
Came right back to one out of my usual thread.
Am converting a VHS tape to DVD. So captured successfully (albeit with an EzCap device). Produced a fairly good quality AVI file and with no editing at all, used VS x2 to produce my mpeg compatible file. Details of that file are here:
File Format: PAL DVD
File Size: 4,514,938 KB
Duration: 6056.920 Secs
Video Type: MPEG 2 Video, Lower Field First
Totoal Frames: 151,173 frames
Attributes: 24 bits 720 x 576, 16:9
Frame Rate: 25.000 frame/sec.
Data Rate: Variable (Max 6000 kbps)
Audio Type: Dolby Digital Audio
Total Samples 290.252,160 Samples
Attributes: 48000 Hz, 5.1 Channels
Layer: None
Bit Rate 384 kbps

Started a new project, imported the mpeg into the timeline and proceeded to produce my DVD folders. The only custom setting was to reduce the bitrate to 5,000 to get the whole file onto one DVD.

So far so good. Problem is slight out of sync audio towards the middle to end of the DVD. It gets progressively worse as if the audio is at a slightly different frame rate to the video! I have double checked my settings when burning the DVD folders and they are the same as the mpeg except for the bitrate and I have chosen LPCM Audio 48000 Stereo. I tried first with Dolby but that gave the OOS so thought I would try this new setting but the result was the same.
Any guidance would be gratefully received.
BTW A belated Merry Christmas to all :D

Hi John

Nice to hear from you, welcome back, it has been a long time, hope you are keeping well.

You mentioned EzCap, did you get ArcSoft program with this device?
Did you try capturing with the ShowBiz DVD.

The EzCap device seems to like capturing to Mpeg2. depending on which version of VS you use depends on what capture options it allows.
The software that comes with EzCap certainly uses Mpeg2.

X2 allows for DVD Mpeg Vcd, Svcd
X3 and X4 only DVD
At least that’s what I see…………..

Your Properties look a little odd.
As its VHS capture, that’s analogue, the frame order should be Upper Field.
The Aspect is 16:9, I would have thought 4:3 given that the source is VHS???

Ok

I would try a DVD Mpeg2 capture missing out the Avi capture.

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 5000 kbps

Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
Or
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R).

Using the above and you would only render once for the completed project.

and a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you

Hi Trevor
Many thanks for the response. Keeping very well for an "Old 'n" thanks. Was just looking at this again before you replied and have to say that I can't remember if I have ever used this little capture dongle before. I can't even remember where it came from. What I did do as read Ron's post in the Announcements section and realised that my device came with VS 10E. Yes you've guessed it! Must be a pirate! So I have decided to invest in the genuine article and start again. I shall take your recommendations on board for later Trevor, so thanks again.

Hi John

Your device may be a pucker one, they did sell the product bundled with VS 10.
Then there were loads of fake products, to such an extent that they changed the name.

As I said earlier it likes Mpeg capture.
You captured to Avi, rendered to mpeg then rendered again using 5000 to downsize the file.
Maybe just one render to many.

The fake version I bought just didn’t work at all, my systems just froze, it was cheap, very cheap………

Just noticed that you are using W7, if you have had the device for a while then its probably not compatible??????????

This is odd, one of my posts here has "disappeared". I replied to your post above Trevor saying that I had in fact, used the device on my old XP machine as I couldn't find a windows 7 driver for it. And of course VS 10 is not compatible with Win 7 anyway. Will start over again when the new kit arrives and take your comments on board re rendering frequency! Amazing how soon you forget after being away from a subject for a while, or perhaps it's an age thing!

Just to report on the next stage.
New kit arrived, installed and after a new download patch for Windows 7 worked to perfection. Took all the advice on board and apart from a slight very small wavy line at the bottom of the frames which I got rid of by putting the captured filed into the Overlay Track and very slightly enlarged the frame until the wavy line went below the preview screen and proceeded to produce the DVD folders and subsequent DVD. Playing on my H TV the results wee equally as good as the original tape! Thanks for all the sound advice. I hope to get back to full participating in the Forum soon but I have just a few loose ends to tie up from my last "adventure"
