Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)

For anyone who's updated from X3 to X4, did you notice, or can you, keep all your older librarys, transistions, effects, templates, etc. from X3 into X4?
I know in previous updates all installed items did not mirgate to the newer version. Wishfully hoping X4 will migrate from X3 vs another "Fresh" install.
Thanks

Hello less2008,
You can try and export the VS X3 Library then import them on VS X4.
To export your library on VS X3, you can click on SETTINGS > LIBRARY MANAGER > EXPORT LIBRARY. Then to import the exported library on VS X4, just click on SETTINGS > LIBRARY MANAGER > IMPORT LIBRARY.

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
Apart from what Abiel has just suggested, X4 is a completely fresh install. It does not overwrite X3 or previous versions, all of which remain fully operational.

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
I am having trouble with the importing of my X3 Library into my X4. After saving my X3 library I try to import it to my X4 and I get an error message. Files import error: Files can't be imported, maybe number of files is not correct or files are invalidated. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric
Yes! that’s what I said in my reply.
The library files are called :-
VS_Video.dat
VS_Title.dat
VS_Image.dat
etc
From the exported libraries folders, Try replacing X4’s file with the ones from X3, then import X4.......
However
For XP …The actual library program files can be found here
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\14.0\en-US
You could try replacing the files here.
First make a copy of the relevant library files.
This will work with earlier versions, whether it works with the new X4 library layout……….I haven’t tried.

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
I found and replaced the files... and no luck. I guess I will have to recreate all the projects I want to take to x4.
Thanks for the help,
Eric

Hi Eric
Your Projects, the VSP files should open in the re-installed X4.
The library content does not affect the running of the Project (VSP)

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
Yes, they do open just fine in X4, it would have just been so much easier for the library to import. Oh well, I will just deal with it, not going to complain a whole bunch as I like the improvements they have made in X4.
Thanks,
Eric

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
Does this mean there is no way to bring X3 libraries into X4? If that is the case, my consideration of going to X4 is decided. My libraries are too important to lose, i.e. I have clips of bird species, filmed over six years, named and organized in a library that I update every year. Without being able to transfer, I would have to review hundreds of hours of video to select those clips again.

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
Hi
The layout of Video Studio library has changed from the earlier version layouts.
X2 /3 uses individual pages for is Video Audio and Sound, selecting each from the drop down panel.
X4 uses a composite single page, you select to hide / show the three options.
Its this framework that cannot be imported.
However the library pages are saved to files in the same way, as I said they are called:-
VS_Video.dat
VS_Title.dat
VS_Image.dat….etc
You should be able to export the library using X2/3 and 4, saving them as a backup.
These folders contain the library files, by replacing the files from X3 to X4 you would effectively be able to import the X3 pages to X4.
In addition the VS_Video.dat type files also reside on the hard drive, I do not know the exact location using W7, But should be able to replace in a similar manner.
I will run a test to confirm I can transfer from X3 to X4.
What actual library pages are you concerned about?
Take care if you look for these files, some are part of the system files (C:\Program Files\Corel ) and are blank library files, the ones you need are under the C:\Documents and Settings\User Name………route
By the way with so many library clips, how do you backup the library???????
PS download the trial of X4 to see the library changes.............. then try transferring the library
Post Edited
I have run a few tests trying to change the library content, Copying file from X3 to X4
Unfortunately I am unable to do this.
The process has worked in the past but the new X4 library seems to be upsetting things. I will continue doing a few more checks.

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
Thank you for testing this. I will look forward to your final results.
When I installed X3 (formerly using VS11.5+) in my new Windows 7 system, I did the standard install and that put the .dat files in a c:/Users/my user name/AppData/Roaming/Ulead Systems/Corel Video Studio Pro/13.0 folder
which was created in the install process.
I also learned on this Forum several years ago to copy all my .dat files to a different location before installing/upgrading to a new VS version and I am very greatful for that! I was able to transfer them from 11.5+ to X3 with no problem. I would need to transfer them to X4 if I upgrade again. Without that possibility, I would stick with X3. As I have stated previously in several posts, my libraries are very important to me and I use and update them continuously. My continuig wish for VS is that it would allow more than 40 Video libraries.
Thanks again!

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Possible Solution)
I do not have X4 but have just completed a procedure that MIGHT help.
I too have a large X3 library. I backed up my User files (i.e., all files & subfolders in the c:user dir) in addition to doing a system backup. All this in prep for my upgrade from Win7-32 to Win7-64. After the upgrade I found my X3 library files were missing.
After scouring this forum I found your post that advised of restoring the .dat files. This I did for X3 (and also for the trial version of X4 which I later un-installed). Like you found, the results were disappointing. None of my libraries were found. After 3 hours of trial and error, the following solution worked. I have not tried it with X4. I am out of time with deadlines looming but will test in the future and post results unless someone else does so first.
I removed X3 from the PC, using Control Panel AND deleting remaining files in the VSP dir under the C:/User dir. I then reinstalled X3. Before starting it for the first time, I copied ALL the files in the Ulead Video Studio subdir (of the C:/User/Username/Appdata/Roaming subdir) FROM my file-copy backup (NOT the system backup) TO the newly installed Video Studio subdir on my C-drive. I started X3 and my libs were in tact. Saved me WEEKs of re-creating.
Hope this helps.

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
So...if I'm understanding this correctly it seems there is no way to just export my library from X2 and then import it into X4? Can the files ie. VS_Video.dat etc. not even be copied and pasted into the new directory created when X4 is installed? This would seem to be a BIG issue for anyone that has a large collection of clips cataloged in previous versions. Hope this is not the case.

Re: Updating from X3 to X4 (Saved content)
About the only way to migrate your, video, audio, photo, and title libraries is by project file (VSP). In VS X3 drag all your video clips from the Video Library onto the video track. Save the project. Open the VSP file in VS X4, create a Library, drag all the clips from the timeline to the Library.
