X4 renders large photo-Jpeg Mov files

Post by Trevor Andrew »

Hi

Using X4
My camera a Panasonic TZ9 records to HD 1280 x 720 Mov using Photo-Jpeg compression, approximately 180mb per minute.

I have created a project some 5 minutes in length. I have added about 8 jpeg images, Cross fade, Colour correction to the video, titles and audio to start.

Using Make movie manager I created a template to represent the cameras properties. (Photo Jpeg.mov)
The rendered file was a massive 8 Gb. At 5 minutes thats big.

Ok I have run some further tests using one minute of video.
1 / no edits 5 video clips.X4 rendered as 170 Mb (same as original and as expected)
2 / Added 4 images, X4 renders to 828Mb (that’s a lot)
3 / Added colour correction to Video clips 1750 Mb (1.7Gb) now that’s big.

The images are Jpegs approx 4 to 6 Mb

I ran simular renders using X2 also finding large sizes.

1 / no edits 5 video clips.X2 rendered as 170 Mb (same as original and as expected)
2 / Added 4 images, X2 renders to 686 Mb (that’s a lot)
3 / Added colour correction to Video clips 592 Mb (strange not as big as in 2 above)

4 / I rendered the second option, disabling Smart Render to produce a file 1067Mb (1Gb) For a one minute video its getting silly.

So why does the file sizes alter so much depending on the edits applied.
I can see variable bit rates changing file sizes but not to this extent.

Rendering to HDV 720p however produces file sizes of 140 Mb quite acceptable and comparable with the original sizes.
Project edit content doesn’t seem to change the file size as when using Photo-Jpeg.

Confused
