burning with pro X3

Post by jrbmaclachlan »

In previous versions I created VSP files. When I came to create a disk I could add one or more VSP files in the share section and then I could click on burn and go and have a meal. The VSP files dont now seem to be any use at all in the share section. I am back to using version 12 that seems to work

If you are referring to X3 then no, you can't use VSPs in the burning module. You must first convert them to a video file (Share>Create Video File), then import those into the burning module. Then you can go and have your meal.

This has been corrected in X4.

X3 VSP files will in fact work in the awful DVD Factory 2010 which originally came with X3 as the burning module. But the program itself is so terrible otherwise that we recommend people don't use it. However, as Black Lab has said, the X3 VSP files won't work in MF 7 SE which Corel made available as a substitute for DVD Factory 2010. It uses essentially the same old burning engine of X2 and prior versions, but was written before X3 was written, so its code cannot see X3 project files. One workaround would be to save your project in X2 format in X3 and use that in MF 7 SE. However, anything new in X3 included in your project, like the Picture-in-Picture filter, would not be included the X2 project file... And as Black Lab also said, the new X4 has reverted to the old burning engine so it will see and use X4 (and X3 and X2) project files.

Thanks Ken. You do an amazing support job. (I think I live near you)
Would you sugest I go for X4 or simply revert to X2. I also sometimes need to burn a dvd that can be put into a player and for it to play without menu selection or dreadful music.

Hi Robert

You indicate in your first post that you are from the UK, if that is the case then you cant be further from Ken he is in New Zealand, in internet terms he’s next door.

To burn a DVD we need a Mpeg2 file, this will be created during the burning process assuming we add VSP’s to the module. That’s the process you are using.

Other options
From the editing stage if we Share Create Video File-DVD an Mpeg2 file is created.
If we now add the video file Mpeg2 (not the VSP) to the burner module the disc will be burned without further rendering, with the exception of creating menus of course.

You will find the overall burning process much reduced as the Mpeg2 has already been created. You may have to eat earlier.

As you have the Mpeg2 video file you can use any authoring program to burn the DVD.

VS X2, DVD Movie Factory 7SE provided with X3. Nero, any authoring program will burn the DVD.

Creating the video file first is not a new idea, I always create the video file first, always have done and always will. I can play the completed file to view the quality prior to burning the dvd.

No Menu’s
Create DVD without menu, from the first window In X2 burner module uncheck “Create Menu”
Similar location when using DVD MF 7se

If you want the same integrated burning feature like in VS X2 then you will surely like VS X4 but I still recommend that you download the trial and do a test run for your self. You can download the full working trial at www.corel.com/trials.

For some reason I thought Ken was in the UK!
I will download a trial
The problem was that I created 2 video files of about an hour each and added them as you sugested into the system when I wanted to burn a dvd. However it said that there wasnt space on the disk and asked if I wanted to reduce the file sizes. It then had to go through the whole rendering process all over again. My food was getting cold! I still feel that upgrading to X3 was an expensive mistake
Thanks for the advice. You are all a great help

It must be my internet accent!!!

With our suggested procedure, there is a little amount of forward planning involved. If you know you have two projects of about one hour each, and want to burn both to one single layer DVD, then to have two hours of video on a disc you will need to lower the bitrate considerably from its default 8000 kbps. That bitrate will only allow about one hour of video on a DVD. So you have to halve the bitrate to double the time available i.e. to around 4000 kbps. (6000 kbps will allow around 90 minutes of video to fit.) You do this by using Share > Create Video File > Custom in VS.

The downside of lowering the bitrate is that it also lowers the final quality of the DVD. 4000 kbps will give you quality roughly equivalent to decent VHS tape. But if getting the two projects onto one DVD is the most important factor, that is what you have to live with. Personally, I prefer quality over quantity, so I would always opt to have only one hour of video per DVD at the highest quality setting (8000 kbps). If the project is a little bit over an hour, then you can either adjust the bitrate down a little e.g. to 7500 kbps (still very good quality) or else use one of the more compressed audio formats such as Dolby which allow about another 10 minutes of video since the default LPCM audio creates larger files.

Hi Robert

Apologies I should have mentioned the bit rate, Knowing your video lengths would have helped. 120 minutes is a lot to burn to disc

When you render / create a video file you have to take into account the length against the bit rate.
A standard DVD holds 4.3 Gb of data
60 minutes using 8000kbps will produce a file approx 4 Gb (full DVD quality)
90 minutes using 6000 kbps (good quality)
and
120 minutes using 4000 kbps (vhs quality)

The standard VS template uses 8000kbps
You would have to use the Custom option or create a template using Make Movie Templates Manager.
Using 4000kbps for 120 minutes of video will create a total size of approx 4 Gb.

Of course if you are not having problems with using VSP’s then continue to do so.
I prefer to create the file first, a matter of personal preference I suppose.

Ps sorry Ken, didn't see your post, was having my tea.

Many thanks. I have downloaded trial X4 and it now does what I want it to do. I will be buying it but I would really like a refund on the x3 upgrade.

One further question. The notes seem to refer to the ability to create dvd labels but there is no clear way of doing it.

First, how long ago did you purchase VS X3? If its been more than 30 days, I think you're out of luck. Corel clearly states that it does have a 30 day money back guarantee.

Next where did you see anything about the ability to create labels? I've read their website concerning VS X4, and there's nothing that I can find to that affect. AFAIK, VS has never had the ability to create disc labels, where DVD MovieFactory and DVD Factory 2010 have.
