I'm having trouble getting my VideoStudio to recognise mp4 files. I can't view them at all and if I try and open one, it does not show up because the VideoStudio does not recognise it as a video file. I read something about downloading a codec so that files can be saved as mp4 but I have no intention of saving anything as mp4, all I want to do is be able to open mp4 files. I'm 15 years old so I do not have a credit card and can't order the codec over the internet, it also says it isn't available in stores - just on the net. To be honest, I don't want to have to pay £23 to download a codec just so that I can open certain videos on a certain program that I can view anyway using quicktime - It seems extortionately priced for such a small thing! Is there anything I can do to open these files without having to spend a bomb on a codec? Any advice would be extremely helpful right now. I've just spent £80* on ULEAD software that now doesn't work - I don't want to pay more.
* I bought other products at the same time, I didn't just spend £80 on this alone. None of them work with MPEG-4 files though.

No other solution than to buy the CODEC for editing and saving.
However, Apple Quicktime 6.x free download can play MP4.

Okay, thank you. That sucks. Sorry about this as I know it is disrespecting the company a lot but I think it's absooloutly pathetic that you have to pay an extra £23 to recieve a small file or whatever it is just to allow you to view files that can be viewed for free in other programs. This is a company that recieves hundreds of thousands of pounds every year with its products and still feels the need to make its customers pay an extra fee just to edit one extra type of file. It's awful! It's basically saying, the newer your camcorder was, the more you have to pay to use us. What a load of ....MikeGunter wrote:

Market forces I'm afraid. I also felt it was a little tight of ULead not to bundle in the MP4 codec, but I think I will just cough up the money.
If all you want to do is use some MP4 clips in your compilation, rather than just produce MP4 then you could consider converting MP4 to AVI using one of the methods that are documented in many places; e.g. http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/t232659.html
