Jerky render from avchd in VS x3 and x4

Post by johnevans4 »

I have been using VS x3 for some time but as renders of avchd were jerky on fast moving subjects I decided to try another editor so I did a trial of Sony movie studio and all of the renders from avchd were perfect on any subject . When I saw a new version of video studio I thought they would probably have corrected the jerky movement problem but it is just the same as x3. I really like all the features of VS and would like to use it again but it's so annoying , most of the video is ok when it's slow movement but then you come to a clip where a car goes past and it looks like kangaroo petrol . It must be the difference in codecs between VS and sony Anybody got any answers , if not I will have to carry on with Sony until somebody corrects the problem .

Thansk John.

I have been using AVCHD for quite a while now. I have a Panasonic small super zoom that does AVCHD Lite which X3 had troubles handling until an update cured it. I bought a LUMIX GH1 for the Holidays which does AVCHD at very high bitrates and full HD as well as 720x60p that is awesome for fast moving clips. I now have X4 and X3 before handles these clips just fine. I have not experienced this jerky rendering that you mention. I do have to uncheck the "Smart Render" whenever I create a file, but other than that I am very satisfied with X4. Perhaps you should share the video clip settings and more details about your problems and I am sure you will get some suggestions here to get you happier with X4... Al

If your source files are MOV format with h.264 video and AAC audio, try changing the file extension from .MOV to .MP4.

That just worked for me with my 1920x1080 .MOV files from a Kodak Zx3 PlaySport.

Thanks for the quick replies chaps . The 2 cameras I am using are Xacti cg10 (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format) and Pansonic fz40 AVCHD and I am rendering to pal dvd. I get the same sort of result with both of them .

Can you right click on one of the new files produced after rendering and check the properties. If it says anything but Upper Field First for Field Order, then that could be the cause of your problems. Getting the Field Order wrong is particularly noticeable with panning shots and vertical lines which look jagged.

Hello Ken . Thanks for the suggestion about the field order I checked the rendered file and it was lower field first m I think VS must use this as default anyway I rendered it again as upper field first and got the same result . I wondered wether the project template had anything to do with it so I tried it as mov but the result is the same. Thanks John
