Hi,
Whenever I try to open an .avi file, I get the message, "Stop. The file number 1 has an invalid format." This occurs with files that I have watched with WinDVD before, so I know they are not corrupt, and it happens with every .avi file I try to open.
i'm on Win XP SP3, and I have the latest update for WinDVD 9.
I installed VLC media viewer to view .mkv files, so perhaps it messed up something with the codecs I have since uninstalled it.
Thanks,
Edward

Re: WinDVD 9 won't open .avi files
What codec is the avi file using? AVI is a container format, so the actual codec being used could be anyone of about 800 different codecs. Is it DV, DivX, Xvid, MJPEG, Cinepak, Intel Indeo, Intel IYUV, Microsoft Video 1, Huffyuv, just to name a scant few.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know which one. Can you tell me a way to determine that?Ron P. wrote:What codec is the avi file using? Hello edwardBe,
If you can open the avi on VLC, click on TOOLS > CODEC information > then copy all the information on the codec details. Just incase it is a codec issue..
Here are some of the codecs that you may want to install.
RealPlayer: http://www.real.com/
DivX: http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack
XviD: http://www.xvid.com/download-xvid.html or at http://downloads.xvid.org/downloads/xvidcore-1.2.2.zip
Windows Media Player: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... dia-player or just download the Windows Encoder at http://www.microsoft.com/expression/pro ... rview.aspx
QuickTime: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Re: WinDVD 9 won't open .avi files
Thanks. It isn't any particular avi file, it is ALL avi files. WinDVD won't open any of them.
VLC is indicating that the codec for every .avi file that I open with it is MPEG-4 Video (DX 50), which I would think WinDVD would not have any problems opening. It has no problems with .mp4 files which are H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1) and no problems with .mov files which are shown as the same as the .mp4 files.
Do you think it is a good idea to remove the current versions of these codecs and re-install them from the sources you have listed? When I start do that I get a message that these are system files and my computer will produce a nuclear cloud that will destroy all biological life on the planet, or some kind of similar MS windows hysteria.
A list of my current codecs can be seen as a screen shot here: http://www.edwardbrode.com/codecs.png
Thanks again,
Edward

Re: WinDVD 9 won't open .avi files
I am using WinDVD only when I put some DVD disk. For *.avi files or other formats like this I use Kmplayer.

Thanks, I'll try it, but I would like to figure what the problem is with WinDVD...somneim wrote:I am using WinDVD only when I put some DVD disk. For *.avi files or other formats like this I use Kmplayer.

Re: WinDVD 9 won't open .avi files
Personally I use PowerDVD, with it is easy to configure different playlists with *.avi files and other type of video files. Also for playing dvd disks is good too.edwardBe wrote:Thanks, I'll try it, but I would like to figure what the problem is with WinDVD...somneim wrote:I am using WinDVD only when I put some DVD disk.
