rendering and saving is too slow - how to speed it
I have used PSP since about 1996 when it was a tiny application. I now use X2.
My computer is only a few weeks old.
i7 2600 Intel with 8 GB RAM, a Radeon 5770 graphics card.
But large tif or jpg files render slowly and save VERY slowly. I frequently add layers and work with layers and the processing slows down to an unacceptable level.
How can the rendering and saving be speeded up using the processor I currently have???
-- a better graphics card??
-- is there a way to internally speed up X2?
I would like information directly from Corel that is actionable information and not trial and error. I need to fix this problem in order to get my work done.
Thank you.

hello who-knows,
part of your problem could be that you are using Windows 7 and PSP X2 on the same computer. keep in mind that PSP X2 is not compatible with Windows 7.
You can visit http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 4516325170, to know which version of the Corel Software is compatible with Windows 7.
There is a workaround for you to make old program works on Windows 7, however we cannot assure you this is a 100% fool proof. You can use the Windows 7 Program Compatibility and the Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC, which are both from Microsoft.
You can follow the steps for Windows 7 Program Compatibility from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... of-Windows
You can download and install the Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtua ... nload.aspx.
You also want to consider upgrading your Corel software, since the latest version of PaintShop Pro is full compatible with Windows 7, you can download the 30 day full working trial at http://www.corel.com/trials, just to see how it works.

Abiel, we value your input to this group but why do you keep repeating this mantra that X2 is NOT COMPATIBLE with Windows 7? As others such as Joelle have pointed out repeatedly, this is NOT TRUE .Abiel Corel NA wrote: ... part of your problem could be that you are using Windows 7 and PSP X2 on the same computer. keep in mind that PSP X2 is not compatible with Windows 7.

At best you could say that X2 is not 100% compatible with Windows 7
(although the correct percentage is probably about 99%).
Your repeatedly stating this devalues your standing as "part of the Corel Support Services".
Please do not take offence at my suggestion.

Re: rendering and saving is too slow - how to speed it
PSP X2 works just fine with Windows 7. In fact, editing any smaller files is no problem. But trying to get reasonable speed for rendering and editing tif files or large jpg, the rendering and all actions are very slow.
I'm sure it must be a tweak that can fix it or a new graphics card.
I'm hoping to have a well-explained reply from Corel.

Re: rendering and saving is too slow - how to speed it
I use Lightroom 3.3 for the raw editing and for most of the images. Some I export to PSP X2.
Oddly enough, I used a cheap laptop with a Celeron processor for 6 months and PSP wasn't as slow as on this machine. But, it was a 32-bit version of Windows 7, so maybe that's the problem.
I guess I'll download the trial of X3 as well as the trila of Photoshop and see how each works. This slowness in rendering is just now acceptable. Disappointing.

If you want an official reply from Corel, you will need to go via their technical support process as set out at http://www.corel.com/supportoptions. Despite a few Corel support people posting here in their own time, this is a user to user help forum and not a place to get official Corel support.
There are four things I would check in your case -
There are four things I would check in your case -
- Your Dell computer seems to be one of the new "Sandy Bridge" ones that have a chipset bug that can cause SATA hard drives on some ports to run slowly. Have you checked with Dell to see if this could be the problem?
- Slow PSP performance is often caused by not having the chipset manufacturer's latest drivers installed. The older drivers, and particularly the Microsoft drivers, don't perform nearly as well.
- Some anti-virus or other security programs can slow down the program's operation by scanning every component each time it is run. Try disabling or temporarily uninstalling the anti-virus software, or setting it to ignore PSP, and see if that makes a difference. (You can avoid any security risk by physically disconnecting your computer from the Internet while you try this).
- If the user permissions aren't correct, PSP will run slowly because it will have problems accessing the registry, software components, hardware, and creating the cache files it needs to work properly. Does running from a different user account, running "As Administrator" or turning off UAC make any difference?

Re: rendering and saving is too slow - how to speed it
Thank you for the suggestions, Tim.
Yes, I already checked about Sandy Bridge. The flaw only affects the Sata II disk connections. At this point, I'm only using the two Sata 3 connectors. And, yes, I updated the drivers at Dell website.
I also tried disabling the antivirus and setting the security to ignore for PSP.
Lastly, though ... using 'run as administrator' did slightly speed it up!! So, there is hope to solve the problem, I think.
I'll investigate this a bit more and see what's what.
I'm sure it must be something fairly simple since it ran on Win7 on the cheap laptop without much problem. It wasn't speedy, but it wasn't slow like this has been.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
I'll come back and post results if I get the problem solved.

Re: rendering and saving is too slow - how to speed it
I decided to download a trial version of CS5 to compare to X2. It is very fast by comaprison. CS5 has a 64-bit version, which may make the difference.
I regret, but I may have to finally leave PSP behind and shell out the $$$ for CS5.
Thanks to everyone who helped.

Re: rendering and saving is too slow - how to speed it
I recommend you DO NOT upgrade to X3. I have X3 on widows 7 64 bit, and it is very slow rendering photographs. The reason is the program, at least on my 6 core processor, will not use more than 1 processor.
Don't upgrade because you are still going to be dissapointed. You could though download and try the trial to find out for yourself.
I have put in an enhancement request to Corel to fix the problem of 4 and 6 core processors. They probably will not fix it until the next version <- My opinion.

I plan to buy Photoshop CS5. The trial works great and runs at 100% efficiency (performance monitor).

I own PSCS5, and I'm still defaulting to PSPX3. XD I think it's because I'm not working on large images (7.2 MP JPG) but I have no problems with the speed.
