This is a resize bug?

Post by Auser »

Or do I just don't get how this program is supposed to work?

I have picture A, size 690x1024

I have picture B size 1024x768

Both are raster.

I copy picture B and paste as a layer into picture A - since its not as tall its sort of letterboxed in the larger picture A

I open the image resize and make sure to uncheck the option "resize all layers" since I just want to resize the new layer.

In the part of the resize dialog called "Pixel Dimensions" i change the setting from "Percent" to "Pixels"
I now enter a the height of 1024 - remember picture A is already 1024 in height, but picture I just pasted as a layer is 768 in height.
Here I am assuming the layer will be resized. But when I click on "OK" NOTHING happens. The layer doesn't change size.

Is that really how it is supposed to work?

Btw, if I change from "Pixels" to "Percent" and increase the height to about 133 (adding 33% to 768 is about 1024) then it resizes it correctly.

I don't know if that's a bug or just a really bad implementation.

Resizing is based on the base image so the reason nothing happened is that the image was already 1024 pixels tall. Changing the percentage resized the layer 133 percent in height of the base image size. If you changed it back to pixels after entering in the percentage you'd see that it resized properly to 1362.

EDIT: Had a friend of mine who has X2 try this out and that's how it works as well. It's always based on the base image.....so that's odd. Maybe a request should be made that when turning off "resize all layers" it should base the resize on the individual layer and not on the base image.

Yeah, i think its a bit odd, and fairly useless when I'm trying to resize a picture unrelated to the base picture.

But if its in the previous version as well, I guess that is their design choice.

Of course its not the first one i find is very odd.

for instance if I have a layer selected and hit 'k' (the pick tool) i can move it with the cursor keys, that's fine - however i can move layers in windows which are not selected if the mouse happens to be over them.
Ie picture A has focus, but simply by having the mouse over picture B it will move that - I think that's a huge design fault.

Depending on your objective and on the complexity of your project, this may serve as a workaround:
° Make a copy of Picture B. Maybe this is Picture BB.
° Resize Picture BB to a height of 1024 pixels.
° Copy Picture BB to the clipboard.
° Paste into Picture A as a new layer.

This doesn't solve the Resize All Layers checkbox issue, but it does get the new image into the base image as a resized layer. It may not always work, but it may be useful for some projects.

Yeah, i know you can resize them before pasting them, but this slows down the process, part of the reason put have it over picture A is to get a feel for the size relationship.

Oh well.
