What is this icon on my film clips in the timeline?

Welcome to the forums
Different small icons are placed over the clip to indicate the use of filters.
Other icons are related to Smart proxy files, these are automatically created when inserting HD video to the timeline.
If you are using VS 12 X2 then I think it’s a Smart Proxy notification
View Tools-Smart Proxy Manager to view the proxy files.
By the way go to File Preferences (F6), and change the “Clip Display mode” to thumbnail only, will now show all frames within the clip, rather than the clip name.

Just a side-note on having the clip display mode set to thumbnail only.. This can be resource intensive, slowing things down. My practice is to only change to that mode when I need to make frame accurate cuts. Once that is done, I switch back to Thumbnail/Filename.
