vs8 slideshow problem

Post by tecstar »

i have created a slideshow of jpeg photos with crossfade transitions and an audio track of music.

I created an mpeg2 PAL DVD file to burn to dvd with DVDWS2.

I have burned the DVD fine, but when i play the slideshow, in a lot of the pictures, but not all, i get this sort of "pulsating" effect.
It doesnt seem to be in time with the music, and the level of detail int pictures doesnt seem to be a factor.

has anyone else had this? I havent noticed it on other slideshows i have made. I have re-encoded the mpeg2 file, but still get the same.

Hi,

Likely you have *patterns* made up of thin 1-, 2-pixel lines, or the images are out of color range.

I use PhotoImpact to keep colors in the RGB scale to 16-16-16 by 235-235-235 (NTSC) or 0-235 PAL.

Apply a small blur to the images, too. A slight blur will do the trick.

mmmm. i know what you mean, but i dont think it is this. it doesnt seem to affect all images, and it doesnt matter about image content.
on the images affected, it is not there all the time. the picture looks a1, then slightly "fuzzed" on the object edges. it is difficult to describe to be honest.
Imagine you have a glass of water next to a speaker, and as the bass kicks, the water gets "fuzzed"..... still not a perfect description though, and it doesnt seem to be in time with the background music.

maybe i need to grap a small clip and post it somewhere.

If this is on a VGA screen rather than a TV, it is likely nothing more than interlace video, normal.

I may be wrong but this looks like a strong compression artefact.

What was your bitrate for the mpeg encoding?

when i created the file, i went to custom, then selected .mpg file type, clicked options, then on the last tab selected PAL-DVD from the drop down, which IIRC gives you 6000 (maybe 7000?).
It doesnt look like artifacts, as when it doesnt happen on other pictures in the same mpeg file, they are perfect.
im gonna have to put a clip somewhere!

ok, it does it when i watch the file on my PC as well.
Maybe i'll up the bitrate to see if that makes a difference.

ok, just upped the quality from 70 to 90, max bit rate 7000 (VBR) and ticked the "apply anti-flicker" option, and the mpeg file now plays ok in windows.

I did it again with "apply anti-flicker" off, and though not as bad, the problem returns, so i guess the bit rate was a factor, as well as the anti-flicker.
Funny though, the manual states that anti-flicker only applies to the menu pages!!!
thanks for all the replies.
