What effect rendering speed the most? GPU or CPU?

I was just wondering what effects rendering speed the most, the GPU or the CPU?

Do you mean render as in to save and encode a video file from a project? If so, the GPU should be faster but I have not been able to verfiy how well Corel's code works for the GPU as they only support Nvidia CUDA for encoding.

Not sure what nvidia cuda is. I did not realize there was more then one meaning to the word rendering. What it means to me is when you render the completed project after you have added your video clips, stills, transition effects, audio tracks, titles etc. I realize that different elements of the project may be faster or slower to render, but my question was about rendering in general (all things being equal). I recently upgraded from VS 10+ to VS Pro X3. I noticed that X3 uses a totally different DVD menu production program. While it has a few nice stock menus, I find it way less versatile then the one that came with 10+. But I did notice that the new program renders the menu in way less time then 10+. So that is nice, but I wish it came with a lot more stock menus and was more versatile.

Yes, render means exactly what you described but not everyone uses the correct terminology. Nvidia CUDA is like ATI Stream. So this program will use Nvidia CUDA to encode (render) but not ATI Stream. However, it will use the GPU to accelerate playback.

If you look on the Performance tab under Preferences, you will see the option to use the Hardware Decoder for play back under the Editing Process heading. You will also see use Hardware Decdoer acceleration and Hardware Encoder acceleration under the File Creation heading. For ATI users, the Hardware Encoder is can not be enabled.

I could have swore I read somewhere that if you have Windows XP Pro, the Hardware Acceleration option is disabled. Does that ring a bell with anyone?
