Blur Out with New Blue PIP

Post by AussieTX »

I am trying to use the Blur Out option with with New Blue PIP but all I get is a sharp edge in the VS preview window.
In the New Blue filters preview window it looks perfect. Blurred outer edge just as I want.
No matter what I try this does not carry over to VS and in playback the object outer edge is sharp.
Now the" Blur In" works fine in both the filter preview window and the VS preview window.
I actually had this trouble on X3 but dismissed it as I was only playing around but now I would really like to use this effect and I'm having the same issue on X4.
Has anyone else been able to use the Blur Out in PIP successfully?

Cheers

Keep in mind you're blurring the border out, not the image or clip itself. My understanding of this part of the PiP, is that you apply a border to your image/clip, and that you can blur that border in or out. The reason you're seeing a soft "edge" when you blur inward, is that the border is on top of the image.

Ron
Thanks for the reply.
Yes I was applying the border.
But even if you take one of the presets which is a yellow border it looks good in the filter preview but not in the VS window.
At first I thought it was just the editing stage so I rendered the project to a file and it still has the hard edge in the file.
I guess all I want to know is does this work for other people or is this just my PIP that's playing up.
I may try and load a demo of X4 on my other PC and see if it has the same issue. Maybe its some sort of video preference thing.
Here are the screen shots of what happens when I attempt this.
This it the picture in the filter's preview window

This is how VS see's it and renders it.

Persistence pays off.
Well at least for me this time.
I found that I had to add a MASK to the image and now the outer blur works.
I added the full image mask (never was sure what this mask actually did :?: ) and it allows the blur out to work.
I don't understand really why this is working but am just happy I got it to work. :D
So in case anyone else runs into this try adding the "full page" mask.
Chose Overlay options and MASK. Select the full image mask

And magically it starts working. Why? Open to discussion. I'm just happy I got it going.

Yes, you need to add a mask, which is something that I do without thinking, so I guess I'm making an assumption that others do too.. I thought that step was part of the instructions in one of the video tutorials for using the PiP with VS. I'll have to do some looking to find it.

Edited
I found it. In one of the tutorials for VS X3, he describes how to use the PiP effect, and part of that is adding a mask.

Yes your right Ron.
#####. I spent all that time messing around when I should have just gone to the bloody tutorial.
Oh well live an learn.
Funny thing is I have been using PIP and this is the first time I have used a Mask.
I'm going to go back and watch the tutorial again.

Cheers
