VS X5: Wish List for Next Version

Post by Ken Berry »

Every so often we have contact with a Corel employee or software engineer regarding new versions. It is always handy if we can point them to a thread such as this.

Please keep any suggestions sensible
In addition, this is not a place to complain about what YOU may consider to be bugs or faults. Those items should be placed in a new thread or tagged onto an existing one dealing with that same issue.

Include a one-line title summarizing the suggestion
We will then have an idea of what each post is about. This would avoid having to read all the thread before determining if a new post is required or not as the topic may already have been covered by someone else. It will also be easier for the Corel developers quickly see each suggestion in the thread and easily find the new added ones.

The title should be BOLD and UNDERLINED at the beginning of the post, as per my own examples in this post.

A link to the Previous wish list thread is here: http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 86#p191586

My wish would be a template for the popular 720@60p format. It's on all the "fun-cams" and I don't really come to grips with it in VideoStudio, somehow quality will always decline.

Handling of Instant Project better. Some means of labeling them would probably do it.

You can do it in Share > Create Video File > Custom. Then select .m2t *** the output format, click Options and change the frame rate to 59.974 fps (or 50 fps for PAL).

And if that works for you, you can make a template yourself with the same properties using Make Movie Template Manager under Settings.

Ok, this never seems to work but I keep plugging... correction, we finally got undock-dockable windows.

Add a right click option on a video for "freeze frame" like Media Studio Pro has (I mention MSP so that Corel can understand in detail what I am asking for).

Add all the motion path features that Media Studio Pro has. Sure miss the 2d and 3d motion path options for titles, objects and video clips. VS is too basic.

Add key frameable playback speed like MSP 8 had.

Add a selection option for creating custom masks on video (for composite work).

Get the DVD burning/menu plug-in to work more like DVD Workshop did (editing feature wise).

Create a 3D graphic program like Cool 3D to work with VS.... like we used to have 6 years ago.

Some wishes:
A more customizable menu with the ability to add extra text boxes
The ability to customize the starting point of video clips in SmartScene menu templates
A play & cut button on the timeline also
A flying balloon transition like Pinnacle studio has
Automated syncing with multiple camera editing (if it is possible..)

*Update wishes: a proper save as option in the dvd authorizing module like in DVD MovieFactory. It's really stupid to save the project in the editor after exiting the authorizing module.
On the menu templates: I would like a blank template with the option to customize buttons, etc.

You can in fact choose the starting point of the video in the SmartScene menu. On the first page of the burning menu, with the first video clip in the burning timeline highlighted, you will have a preview screen in the upper right of the burning screen showing the first frame of that video. Move the slider to the point where you want the video in the menu to start. Then go back to the thumbnail in the burning timeline and right click it. You should now have an option down at the bottom to 'Change Thumbnail'. Select that, and the thumbnail will change to the point selected in the preview screen. Then, when you select Next, and the menu screen appears for editing, that new thumbnail should now be in the SmartScene Menu.

Could you also please expand on what you mean by a 'play and cut button on the timeline'. I am not sure what you are after there.

3D cameras like the Fuji REAL 3D W3 which I own can record movies in 3D-AVI format-would be great if I could import and edit 3D videos from that camera in the next VS version.

Right below the playback screen is a "play" button and the scissors "cut" button. With the new flexible workspace, one could position the playback screen on the one monitor and the timeline view on another screen. When using the slider on the timeline to move to a certain exact position where you want to cut or split the video, it is a nuisance to move the mouse cursor back to the playback screen to use the "cut" button. Likewise when you move the slider to a specific point in the timeline where you want to start playback, you should be able to access the play button on the timeline. I know you can start play as well as pausing with the spacebar, but I don't remember any other keyboard shortcuts at the moment to help with cut.

Ken, I did try your instruction and it's easy. Now I can make proper use of the SmartScene menus! :D I wonder what else I missed with VideoStudio

This is another thing Media Studio Pro has.... more editing tools right on the top of the time line like which is very helpful when we start undocking windows and spreading things out on larger or multiple monitors. Video Studio and Media Studio Pro are two programs from the same family and since MSP is now dead and the current owners of VS have decided to put a "Pro" title on it they could learn a lot from it big brother (MSP) and give us back some really cool tools that would be worth paying for instead of fixes and gimicks. Sorry if I sound so flustered but the answers have been right here on this forum for over a decade now and Corel could really shine here but they don't.... if they want to make money, look at what we need and what we had and make Video Studio a real "Pro" application that we would buy and be proud to use.

Stepping off my soap box now. :D

One suggestion for cool effects would be to add a feature that would let us create a tilt shift effect in ceertian shots.

I have not tried it in X4; but my experience in X3 is that while you can create a 60ps template for output, the editor itself cannot deal with 60fps video at all.
Any 60fps video imported into the time line would automatically be "down converted" to 30fps (every other frame dropped with previous frame duplicated - so you still see the 60fps in media properties, but it is in effect just a 30fps video with duplicated frames). So this renders the "60fps" output meaningless.

This took me to a while to realize what's happening when I failed to get the smooth slow motion effect on playing back 60fps video at 30fps rate.
