Software Stability

Post by bkolbl »

I am a proficient U-Lead user and was excited about upgrading to Corel's VideoStudio Pro X3.

I work with large files and about 30 minutes into the video, the software froze and crashed. I had to shut it down via Task Manager.

When I started the program up again, it told me there were three patches available. I loaded the first one and started working again.

The software crashed 3 more times in the course of this video. This has never happened to me using ULead. There didn't appear to be any reason or cause of the crashes, i.e. I was manipulating the video in different ways each time. This was annoying but given the cool new features semi-acceptable.

What was unacceptable was its inability to save the file to flash format. I tried twice - and both times it crashed and told me to send you the dump.

I don't have time to trouble shoot your software for you and am really disappointed in the software stability.

Please let me know if there are patches I need to load to get the flash peice to work.

A few points :-

1 - it is not 'OUR' software - note the title of this forum is 'USER TO USER' and we are all just that - Users - we do not work for or owe allegiance to Corel - we are just trying to help each other - so we may not know all the answers - and we do NOT want the dump file here - send it to Corel customer services.

2.- When the programme told you there were 3 patches available why did you only install the first - what about installing the rest ?

3. - please complete your profile in full with all the details of your computer etc. - Instability is often as much about your equipment as the software - fill in the details and someone may be able to help you

Sometimes yes, except not in this case. It's not overclocking instability or a faulty power supply.

This software is very unstable at best. People's 'equipment' should not cause a problem with the software. If the software runs on windows 7, it runs on windows 7. Otherwise, put "Runs on windows 7, except sometimes when you click here and there or load a MOV file larger than 500 megs with an nvidia 460 768gb card but not with 1gb card or if you plug in your usb headset while we are rendering video bla bla bla".

It is unstable and Corel needs to fix it.

Also, I know this is supposedly not an official 'corel' forums, so why is it hosted on the corel 'ulead.com' domain? phpbb is a subdomain of ulead.com. And if someone is bashing the product, assume they are directing it to Corel. I did.

It is Corel's web board, they provide it. However they do not manage or staff it. Every now and then a Corel rep may visit and participate. PHPBB is the software, regardless of the domain or sub-domain. Corel does own the servers that the web board resides on.
People's 'equipment' should not cause a problem with the software.
I agree, however not realistic. I wonder just how many different combinations there are? You can take identical computers, with the same software loaded, and yet there is going to be at least a slight difference. It could be how one has services load, has memory allocated, the monitor display settings, and so on. So yes it can cause a problem with the hardware. Here's one example that I just learned about a couple of weeks ago.

I purchased New Blue Video Essentials IV. It loads and runs fine on my laptop which you can see the specs to below my avatar. However on my desktop, which the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64, 3200+, running Win XP home. It would cause VS to crash immediately. First glance I thought it to be a problem with VS. Not the case, it was due to an instruction that the particlur CPU (AMD Athlon 64, not a rare CPU), interpreted the code, and then caused the plug-in to throw an error.
What was unacceptable was its inability to save the file to flash format.
If it is the software is a fault here, then there should be a majority that has the same problem. I've had no problem with creating FLV video files. It could be caused when Adobe, (who some time ago, bought out the original owner of flash, Macromedia), produces an update. These seem to happen very often. I think most companies, Corel included, tries to do it's best to keep up with these, but when they are coming almost monthly, how are they suppose to stay ahead of the curve? First they have to know a problem was caused by whatever. Tracking it down probably is a nighmare for them. Again, stop and think just how many possibilities are possible with computers, and software..

Hi, did you patch up to SP2? You should not have crashes after patching up to SP2. SP2 makes X3 more stable.

Hello bkolbl,

Please do keep in mind that software conflicts can cause any program to became unstable. So I would suggest that you check if you have program that can conflict with VS X3 when you edit videos. Did you install codec packs like Klite or does so called "all in one codecs" that are consists of codecs from other company?

You also want to check on your computer and see if there is something that you need to update like directx, video driver or windows updates perhaps. Also check if you have an oudated Flashplayer.

If you think you have done all the suggestion being provided here in the Forum. You can contact our Tech Support and they can check your computer for you. You can go to http://www.corel.com/support for ways on how to contact the Tech Support.
