From the Videostudio comparison sheet linked earlier:
GPU and CPU Acceleration – Support for multi-core processors, including optimization for Intel Core™ i7, and General Purpose including support for NVIDIA CUDA™.

Intel Core™ ® – Support for Intel multi-core processing

Intel Core™ i7 optimization

Optimization for AMD multi-core processors and ATI™ Graphics Processing Units

Enhanced Speed and Performance – Save time and get fast rendering with support for new 2nd generation Intel Core™ and AMD processors.
Can someone explain exactly what the program does for i7 processors and ATI graphics cards? I never see VS use more than one CPU thread and it doesn't seem to do anything at all with my ATI graphics card.

I'd like to know what of the ATI GPU it uses for what. I've been using X4 and I can't see my GPU being used at all.

Have been a user since 1997 and am one of those seriously hurt with the death of Media Studio Pro (and Photo Impact, and Cool 3D, and DVD Workshop). But I stumbled on in our world inspite of the loss of such an amazing tool(s). For me, VS has always been lacking and too simplestic I thought to warrant the "Pro" title but in versions 12 and the "X3" I found it would fit my easier projects and I always hoped for more, there is so much I miss in MS Pro 8.0.

Recently, I had to upgrade to a 17" Sony intel I7 laptop from a Sony 18" Core Duo that worked very well with VS X3 and HD video (combined scource from my Canon 7D, Sony CX150 and my GoPro HD). With VS X3, the newer Intel I7 was slow and tempermental compaired to my older Core duo laptop and VS X3 experienced a major conflict to a recent Quick Time upgrade that Corel was slow and in-effective at fixing (from my point of view). Just yesterday, with a fully up-to-date version of VS X3 I could not create a simple AVCHD file or Disc and had to use Sony Vegas Pro 9 to render the file from an HDV version (some of my scource was 720 from the GoPro).

I downloaded the Demo of VS X4 and loaded two current projects on it. I also set the preferences to use all hardware acceleration. I can say, performance speaking, I see noticable speed increase and a faster interface. My AVCHD project rendered without problem! Live preview was even better!

I find the DVD authoring plug-in loads very fast though I am sad to see the abscense of many templets (yes, I have downloaded all content currently available and none of the content shown in the VS X4 video is there... perhaps when I buy it?). I hated DVD Factory 2010 (and it's DVD Movie Factory 7SE replacement) but loved the animated menu templates it had and often endured the slow and scetchy response to use them. Would love to be able to access those templates on VS X4's DVD plug-in.

One minor thing I hated about VS X3 was how, when I clicked on an audio track it always jumped to the begining of the clip causing me to loose the spot I was trying to edit. VS X4 does not do this and stays right where I clicked it! Thank you Corel!

Will continue testing. Wish they had added some features I miss, like the "freeze frame" option that is available with a right click on a video clip from MSP or the advanced moving path options that MSP has. I know, I know.... this is not MSP but if Corel wants to add the "Pro" title to this program then they need to give us "Pro's" back the tools we lost with the death of MSP.

I found one instance. I'm using Multi-trim on a video clip and the GPU is active (30 -35%).

I know. that's the one feature that really intrigued me. I must not have written my post properly.

I won yesterday's free giveaway on twitter and will have to make a point of reserving some time to kick it's tires soon. Now I need to find how to properly uninstall X3 to ensure there are no conflicts with X4.

There's going to be copies given away today and tomorrow. They usually open the contest around mid-day and close it between 1pm and 4pm, all times Eastern US.

Shouldn't need to. Many of us have multiple versions of VS on the same machine.

Still testing the new VS X4 by palying with the Time Lapse feature and by reworking some of my VS X3 projects. One thing I really wish this version had was an advanced mask mode for doing composite work. I see the mask feature of this version is as usless as previous versions. Would love to have a selection mode for creating custom masks. Oh, well... something more for the wish list that never seems to happen.

Can anyone tell me the download size of X4 and if the trial download can be saved in a location on the hard drive? Also, can smartsound be imported from the smartsound tracks already installed by X3?

I downloaded the TBYB version yesterday, and it was around 760MB. However, on installation, it says it requires 1.5 GB free space. And I just downloaded it to my Downloads folder, where it still sits after installation.

First crash.... was trying to load an instant project and the program just shut down. Will try to recreate if I can. Have X3 and X4 on a brand new Sony VIAO Core I7 laptop running Win 7 Home ver with all current updates.

I just ordered the box version of X4 and I have the TBYB version installed now.
When I get the pkg, what's the recommeded way of installing? Uninstall/reinstall OR fire up X4 and input the serial number?

TIA,
Walt

Just tested my copy of X4 and here is my report:
1. Improved & clear sound playback on MPEG-2 video file, both in project and clip preview.
2. Smooth editing of MPEG-2 with smooth and fast toggling between playback and editing
3. Flexible workspace works good for me on my 19" HDef screen, minimizing the playback screen gives full access to the options panel if the playback is in front of the panel with the timeline at the right of the playback screen.
4. When the timeline is on the right the slider moves off monitor with playback, but there is an option below the timeline box to move the timeline to the slider when stopped. It's obviously meant for an extension screen anyway.
5. VS X4 did not crash once and rendering was smooth and fast.
6. Playback preview was also smooth with several video filters.
7. VS X4 easily picked up my existing smart sound libraries.

So far so good. Definitely an improvement on VS X3, I'm impressed. :D
Only one complaint so far: It's only licensed to use on 1 single computer and that is a problem for me at the moment. :x

You can install it on multiple computers, but only play it on one at a time, according to the EULA...

X4? I've read: "license to run on 1 single computer, where run means either in the ram or physical hard drive of installed computer" . Looks for me like solid 1 computer allowed with the software on.... correct me if I'm wrong
