Nikon D40X RAW (NEF) file support?

I just finished making sure all 4 published patches were applied to my copy of Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3. The Nikon D40X is in the supported camera list. When I try to open a NEF file I took today I get the following error: "An error has occurred while trying to read from the file." What am I missing?

Is the raw file already saved on your computer's hard drive?

You may want to save or import the raw file on your hard drive before opening it on PSP X3. You can also use the CAMERA RAW LAB when working with RAW Files. Just visit this page http://bit.ly/eegI0X.

I set the camera to RAW, snapped a few test shots, removed the SDHC card, put the card in a USB reader, connected it to my PC, moved the resulting ".NEF" photo files from the card to my hard drive. This is how I always unload the camera. I never use the USB cable to cable the camera to my PC.

Whenever my version of Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 tries to open any of the .NEF files I get the error message. I can't get to the RAW Lab unless I can open the file.

So I'm still stumped.

So still no solution. Assuming someone else can actually do this, let me ask a question. Do you have any Nikon software installed on the PC?

I bought my camera used and received no software. I see on the Nikon website there's some sort of NEF driver. I'm wondering if Corel's software assumes this driver is loaded?

Found a where you can download the NEF Raw codec from Nikon's website. Try downloading it and see if PSPP picks up on it. I think it should.

Installed the RAW Codec and tried again. Same error message.

Is there anyone with a large email mailbox that I could email one NEF file to? I'd like someone to try this who seems to have this working with their PSPP setup.

How large is your file? If it's larger than 25MB, most email accounts, even Gmail will not allow it. What I've done for large files is use a free file sharing service like Skydrive (Microsoft's). Create a Skydrive account, then upload it, and then just post the link to it. http://explore.live.com/windows-live-skydrive

This is a trash photo taken in raw mode on my D40X. If someone can open it with PSPP X3 let me know.

The file opens correctly for me in PSPP X3 Camera Raw Lab using either the File\Open interface or drag-and-drop from Windows Explorer.

I could open it with PSP X3 - it's a picture of a file cabinet.

Could you fire up your copy of PSPP X3, do a Help->About, copy your System Info and paste it here?

Well, every similar to mine, other than I'm running on a much older AMD system. Maybe I've run into a bug. We're running the same build.

I am having the same problem too! I have a Nikon D50, every time I try to open up a RAW photo I get a error message. I would appreciate any help!
