VS 10 Audio Voiceover Crash

Post by KenTarran »

Hi,
I am using VS10 to edit old VCR tapes and burn to DVDs. I have edited the video with out too many problems and I wanted to add some audio voiceover narration to the video.

As soon as I click "start recording", the program freezes and the PC crashes so that I have to manually switch the machine off to recover the situation.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what did you do to overcome the problem? I would be grateful for any help or assistance. :(

By the way, I have been able to add background music tracks without any problems at all.

Kind regards,
Ken

I'd have thought you'd have enough computer power to do it.
What are you file types in the project? just in case they are overloading it!
In order to get the project done, while searching for an answer, why not record the voice over using another programme, such as audacity -free - and add this as another audio track?

Try recording a voice-over without any video, just to see if it still crashes. What type of mic are you using, USB or the Mini plug? If USB, how many USB devices are you using at the same time? Sometimes USB does not do a very good job of delegating priority. You might also try shutting down some processes that are not necessary, that may be running in the background.

I learned just the other day, that crashes can boil down to instructions written or not written for specific CPUs. I fought installing New Blue's Video Essentials IV, for about a month. VS consistently crashed. After sending a log file to New Blue, their developers found that a set of instructions they had wrote did not take into account the CPU that my machine used, which is an AMD Athlon 64.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the very quick reply. The mic I'm using is not USB, it's plugged into the PCs own dedicated mini-socket. As far as other software running on the machine at the same time is concerned, I deliberately shut down everything else that I possibly could but it still gave me the same problem.

I will start a new project though, and create a voiceover audio track without any video just to see if the PC doesn't crash. I'll report back later.

Many thanks,
Ken

I am also wondering the the VS 10 version you are using has the letters SE after it, and whether it came with the device you used to capture your old VCR tapes... Moreover, I am wondering whether the device is an EZCap... If so, then a lot of owners of that device are having trouble with it. See http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 30#p211330

As an aside, though I understand your desire to have VS 10 work properly, I long ago abandoned using any version of VS for voiceovers. That was not because those versions did not work, but because I found I had much more control and flexibility when I used third party audio software such as Nero's Wave Editor or the freeware Audacity program, which is quite powerful. Such programs allow you to edit your voiceovers in detail, add filters and effects etc. Then you simply save it as a .wav and insert it in the VS audio timeline.
