Problem with .mov's
I’m editing last year’s family video. The project is .avi as the bulk of content is .avi. I’ve also a few .mov’s from my iPhone. I’ve found that the .mov’s make VideoStudio crash when I put them on the timeline & view or edit them.
I’ve searched on this forum & found it’s a known problem. The general approach seems to be transcode the .mov’s to something else. I’ve tried converting the .mov’s to.avi (with the same properties as my project), but the quality of movement isn’t great. I’ve also tried .mpg, but VideoStudio crashes.
The .mov clip properties are:
Compression: H264
Attributes: 24 bits, 640 x 480
Frame Rate: 14.987
The properties of the project I want to use the clips in are:
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
Uncompressed
I’m wondering if the juddery movement is something I’m going to have to live with, given that it was captured on an iPhone.
The details of my set-up are:
Software: Pro X2 (VideoStudio v12.0.96.1)
Toshiba Satellite L500-1WG
Windows 7, Home Premium, 64 bit
Pentium Dual Core CPU, T4400, 2.2GHz, 4 GB RAM
Video type: PAL
Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Problem with .mov's
Is that AVI/DV? That's probably as good as your going to get... I wouldn't expect DV to look any worse than the original MOV...I’ve tried converting the .mov’s to.avi (with the same properties as my project),
And the bottom line is, your final video has to be one format, and something's going to get converted!
There is always some theoretical quality loss when you convert from one format to another, and when you interpolate to add pixels (670x480 to 720x576) and frames (14.9 to 29.9).
Is 29.97 correct, or is that a typo? PAL should be 25 (or maybe 24.97).

Re: Problem with .mov's
Many thanks for the reply.
I think that’s probably my fault as I upped the frame rate to 29.97 ... thinking that a higher fps may help to maintain quality. I didn’t realise it would change PAL to NTSC. I’m in the UK, so need it to be PAL. Is it OK just to change the project properties or do I have to change each clip one by one as well?
Thanks,
Michael
If I look at the properties for the .avi files I’ve shot, the file format is listed as: “Microsoft AVI Files – Open DML”. If I look at the video compression it’s listed as DV Video Encoder -- type 1"Is that AVI/DV?
I’ve just looked and the project properties are showing as “ NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps).“Is 29.97 correct, or is that a typo? PAL should be 25 (or maybe 24.97).

Re: Problem with .mov's
If it's just the Project Properties that are 29.97, just changing it to 25fps would be ok. However if you captured the video as NTSC (29.97) you will need to re-capture them with the correct PAL settings of 25fps, as well as the resolution of 740 x 576. Right-click a video clip in the time-line or library, select properties to check them.

Re: Problem with .mov's
From looking at the clip properties a couple of things suggest it’s PAL: the frame rate is 25 fps and the audio compression is “DV Audio – PAL”. As a further check I dragged a bit of the content onto a new timeline and looked at the clip details when it asks me if I want to change the settings ,it said that it’s:If it's just the Project Properties that are 29.97, just changing it to 25fps would be ok. However if you captured the video as NTSC (29.97) you will need to re-capture them with the correct PAL settings of 25fps, as well as the resolution of 740 x 576. Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 32.000 kHz, 12 Bit, Stereo
Which looks like what I want.
As I’ve already spent a lot of time editing the video I want to be sure before I spend any more time on it. I’ve taken a small section, created the mpg, burnt it to DVD and then played it on my laptop and TV. Out of interest I tried both NTSC & PAL versions, and both played the same on my TV / DVD Player … unless I’m missing anything subtle. Must admit I expected the NTSC not to work on my TV.
All of this tells me several things:
1. My general approach to the .mov’s (ie transcoding to .avi) is OK
2. I need to convert the .mov’s to 25fps PAL (not NTSC which I had done).
3. I need to change my project properties to 25fps
4. I need to check to make sure that I maintain the 25fps PAL through the workflow.
Many thanks for the suggestions
Michael

Just as a footnote, most PAL stand-alone DVD players have no difficulty at all playing NTSC DVDs. However, the reverse is not true... Most NTSC players have difficulty with PAL video.Must admit I expected the NTSC not to work on my TV.

Re: Problem with .mov's
Thanks - I'd been wondering about that.Just as a footnote, most PAL stand-alone DVD players have no difficulty at all playing NTSC DVDs. However, the reverse is not true... Most NTSC players have difficulty with PAL video.
As a further footnote, while trying to convert my remaining .mov's to .avi's I was having yet more problems as the .avi's were massive and also made VideoStudio crash at one point.
After some further hunting I came across this update http://bit.ly/ekRbpv from Corel. I tried rolling QuickTime back back to v7.55 and the whole problem with .mov's went away immediately. I can now both view and edit the .mov's without a hitch.
Regards,
Michael

Re: Problem with .mov's
Just on the Quicktime update problem., Having experienced crashes when editing and rendering I rolled back to an older version of Quicktime 7.6.09 by unistalling the latest Quicktime update and installing version 7.6.09. So far everything is no longer crashing. By reading this log I seem to have corected my problem as well. Thanks for the tips

Re: Problem with .mov's
Quicktime 7.6.9 is the latest release. It seems that you uninstalled the latest release and then installed it again? Just uninstalling and then reinstalling the same version can fix things.
MotionStudio 3D 1.0; Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X7 (w/o sp1) (Download), Corel PaintShop Pro 15.2.0.12 (Download)

Re: Problem with .mov's
Just a bit of additional info that might help others with this problem.
I've recently upgraded to X4.
I've been trying to load Video files created from a Kodak Zi8 Video Camera (.mov)
I uninstalled Quicktime and installed the latest version 7.69.
X4 doesn't recognise the files and I get a File Mismatch error when I try to load them. In the 'Open Video File' dialog box, the file names are displayed BUT the Info button remains 'ghosted'
I then rolled back to Quicktime version 7.55. In the 'Open Vidoe File' dialog, the Info button now works and I can load the same file OK. The Subject field says "KODAK Zi8 Pocket Video Camera" as expected.
I haven't got the time to work out which Newer version breaks things. Hope this helps some of you.

Re: Problem with .mov's
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38200 (topic: VSProX3 MOV support is broken. Solved by MOV->MP4 conversion)
Take a look at the thread above. Alternative solution is to re-mux MOV qt files to standard h264 MP4 file format which works much better in VideoStudio X versions. Note! The trick is about re-muxing the MOV file to MP4, NOT TRANSCODING so there is no quality loss and re-muxing goes through in couple seconds even with big video files. Transcoding would take ages and quality decreases.
I have done this several times with my Kodak Zi8 MOV files and works beatifully. No need to fight with QT versions and VideoStudio incompatibilities anymore.

Re: Problem with .mov's
Interesting, could be a better solution to my problem - having to change QT back to later version after having logged onto Itunes, which changes QT to latest version.
Please, what is, and how do you. re-mux. What application do you need to do this? Presume you do it before drawing mov files to VS video line. Sorry, not too knowlegeable or expert on these matters.

RobertS: Please follow the link on top of my previous post in this thread (it is actually a link to older post within this very same forum). The post behind that link has detailed instructions how to do it. Well, here goes again the link
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38200
As a summary, the trick is as follows
- Download FFMPEG tool (the other post has link to that OpenSource freeware tool)
- Run your MOV files through the FFMPEG tool using this command line (open CMD shell in Windows to run this command): ffmpeg.exe -y -i MySourceVideoFile.mov -acodec copy -vcodec copy MyOutputVideoFile.mp4
- Load the generated MP4 file in VS authoring tool and enjoy crash free and smooth preview and rendering
