How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
Hello,
I recently purchased Video Studio Pro X3 - and after going through the knowledge base and product read me, I have been unable to find an answer to the following problem I have:
PROBLEM:
I have a number of videos (HD 1080p) that I have recorded. Each video is on average 50 minutes in length - what I want to do it to be able to do is to slice this video into 10 x 5 minute videos (based on topics discussed in the video), (so essentially clip the video into these segments and edit each one) and then when producing the video file - actually create 10 separate video files (all with editing in place) instead of one single large file.
As far as I have been able to work out, I need to go through the whole file, clip relevant sections, edit them, and then save project. I then need to go trim the saved file 10 times, to extract each time the single 5 minute video I want to create. This is a fairly manual and time consuming process, hence my hope that I can create 10 files based on the clips I have made in the larger 50 minute file in one go.
Any help you could provide would be much appreciated (as I have 30 videos to edit, so looking for ways to save time!)
Cheers,
Rowan

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
As you have found, VS does not "split by scene" HD clips. You may want to Google for a small capture program called HDVSplit that will do what you are looking for.

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
Hi Black Lab,
Thanks for responding so quickly! So, if I edit the video, and insert the clips, and then run the edited video through this software, it will produce multiple video files? I tried it but it didnt quite work for me (perhaps I am doing something wrong!) Do you know if beyond Corel, if there is video editing software that allows you to do this?
Cheers,
Rowan

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
Umm
That's not quite correct...
VS cannot *capture* using split-by-scene with HD video, just as it can't with incoming SD mpeg-2. However, you can capture the whole HD video, then with it in the timeline, you can right click it and choose split-by-scene then.
However, I am not quite sure that is necessarily what kunzr1 is after. If he knows he has about ten changes of scene in his video, this should work fine. But if there are many more changes of scene in the fifty minutes, then you will end up with many more than 10 video clips. You could, however, reduce this number by reducing the sensitivity of the scan with the slider found when you click the Options button. But I still suspect you could end up with a lot more than 10 clips.

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
Regarding your question about HDVSplit, no that splits-by-scene during capture. Read my post above to find out how to split once the capture has already taken place.

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
I am sorry Rowan. I guess I didn't read far enough into your post to get the full understanding of what you want to do.
What I would do in your case is capture the entire clip. With it in the timeline I would cut it. Using your example of a 50 minute clip, you would first cut it at 5 minutes. Now drag that 0:00-5:00 minute clip to the library, where it will make a "virtual copy". Now go back to the timeline and make a cut at 10 minutes. Now drag the 5:00-10:00 minute clip to the library, an so on.
When you are finished cutting and saving the virtual clips you can bring them down, one by one, to the timeline for editing. You can save each one as its own VSP, then render each to its own video file.

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
Hi Jeff and Ken,
Thanks for your prompt answers! So I understand now that I cannot take the 50 minute file, split it by scene and then create 10 separate video files at once. I need to do it one at a time (which is painfully slow!)
I know this is a Corel user forum - and perhaps asking this question not encouraged - do you know if there is a editing software that allows you to do this?
Thanks!
Rowan

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
Any that I've used do not. That's just the nature of editing video. You can split the files, and then render all the remaining clips to a single new video file, or what has been previously suggested.kunzr1 wrote: do you know if there is a editing software that allows you to do this?

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
Do you mean;
Edit 1 x large file on time line,
creating 10 seperate small files
batch convert them to 10 x new small files?

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
Possibly slightly quicker...
move the 50 minute clip into the time line. Go through it once and split the video into the ten segments. This cant take long really.
You'll have a time line with ten clips. Move each clip into the library till you have ten thumbnails in the Library pane and an empty timeline (or leave one to render out a new video file)
It shouldn't take longer than 5-10 minutes to cut up.
If the OP thinks this is too time consuming I have recently finished a 2 minute fast pace video with 50 stills and clips from 5 video sources and it took hours of fiddly work to finish... i mean more then 12 hours. I loved the result and enjoy the process because of the result

Re: How to Split Single Video file into Multiple Video Files
just by coincidence I have just done exactly that - took a 56 minute video - split it into 12 seperate videos - added a title and ending to each one - rendered out a new file for each one - burn't all 12 to a DVD with a 12 thumbnail menu - almost exactly 2.5 hours which I was quite happy with, didn't think that was overlong considering I had to manually find the edit points for each one as the original was a continuous video and I could not use split by scene.
