Editing file from DVR is file size too big

Post by akmiecik »

I have done a lot of editing with VideoStudio Pro on current systme but never ran into somthing like this:

I have a 2.7G file that I pulled from my DVR (mpg). Plays well on my ThinkPad but when I try to load it into VideoStudio Pro X3 (13.6.2.69) the software stops responding (get the "not responding" message) and I have to end the process.

I updated to SP3, no luck. Uninstalled and reinstalled VideoStudio, no luck. Search Corel help and various boards and found nothing about file size being an issue. Even adjusted virtual memory settings.

Is it possible the file is just too big? If anybody can point me to things to test to try to get it working I'd be extremely grateful, thanks.

Going to run the file through Handbrake to see if a different format might help.

Welcome to the forums!!

2.7 GB is not very big at all, so your computer should not be having any problem handling it. But you say it is mpg, but not exactly what kind -- mpeg-1, mpeg-2 or mpeg-4? Standard definition or high definition? If VS will at least allow you to insert it in the timeline, can you right click on it and copy ALL its properties here please. If not, can you at least let us know some other way what kind of mpeg it is. Without that sort of information, we can't really do much.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm pretty excited about getting to the next level of using this product.

I'm using CapDVHS to pull it off the DVR and it looks like that creates an MPEG-2 with a .mpg file type extension
(and after much patience, got to the properties via VS and it confirmed MPEG-2)

CapDVHS captures transport stream mpeg-2, which has a slightly different packet structure to program stream mpeg-2. VS X3 can handle certain types of transport stream natively (.m2ts and .mts) but may in your case be having some difficulty with the tags used by CapDVHS. You might therefore need to use another program to convert your mpeg-2 clips to program stream. Perhaps one of the best for this would be the commercial (around $50) Video ReDo. But you could try the freeware HDTVtoMPEG2 or PVAStrumento. I have used the former successfully in converting my own HDTV card's transport stream .tp files (another version of mpeg-2) to program stream quite successfully.

I am also trying to do similar thing. Captured a MPEG stream using CapDVHS from a DVR with firewire cable.
Have a 20GB file for 2.5 hour of video. Imported that into Corel Video Studio Pro X3 13.6.2.69

For the me the CapDVHS created directly the MPG suffix file. The properties of the file are as follows:

MPEG-2, 1280x720, 16:9, 60fps, 38.8104Mbps stream

Got the first 24 minutes of the video segment by cutting and deleting the remaining part.

Rendering this 24 minutes into a video file of same properties took just over 2 hours on my Intel i5 with 8GB system. At this rate, I need to abandon the idea of this editing job.

Other interesting observation - the original file was 20GB for 2.5 hours which mean it should be about 3GB for 24 minutes. But the file rendered is about 7GB - not sure why?

Rendering the same into AVCHD 1920X1080 also took a long long time and created a file os about 3GB for 24 minutes. I have noticed that this has only half as many frames as the original file.

One question is which HD format is the best for long term hard disk storage of this video in terms of quality of video, storage size, portability to other formats at a later date etc.

Most importantly what's wrong with the system and any way to improve this rendering time?

thanks in advance.

for the problem mentioned above, I think it just takes a long time to import the video - we tend to abandon thinking it is hung. Hope that helps.
