MTS file - stutter?

Post by WhiskeyandMe »

I am trying to put a video together and I am having problems with MTS files "stuttering"

The Audio and some Video are "stuttering"

I know that with MOV files you can convert to MP4 and get around it...

I have tried to convert the MTS files to MP2 but no success...

Anyone have an easy fix for me!

Thanks! :)

Welcome to the forums! However, do you remember those questions we asked you to fill in about your computer during the registration process? That wasn't just for nothing. And now I have to ask for them again. Without that information, I doubt that anyone will be able to help you. You see, .mts files are AVCHD/mpeg-4 and just about the most difficiult video format on the consumer market today. It is particularly demanding on computer resources so you need at least a decent Core 2 Duo, and preferably something better, to be able to edit and, more importantly, play it smoothly. And even then, stuttering during editing is pretty common. I get it all the time and you will see from my profile that I have a Quad. But the important thing is that in many or even most cases, once the video is rendered, there is no stuttering. Have you actually tried rendering out a project?

And what properties did the mpeg-2 video have? Was it high definition like your mts files i.e. HDV/mpeg-2, or standard definition mpeg-2?

Speaking of which, have you tried using the SmartProxy feature of X3? The program automatically, though a little slowly, converts your mts files to temporary standard def mpeg-2 files. You edit those -- and they should not stutter! Then when you are satisfied with the end result, you apply the edits to your mts clips then render out to AVCHD if that is what you are after.

Ken,

Thank you for the reply.

I am going to figure out all the answers to my computer and then get back with you.

I am "VERY" new with using VS X3, and trying to beat the learning curve! :)

I look forward to learning more and more through this site!

Thanks again! :)

Ken,

I have tried to update my profile best as possible... :)

With that being said...

What are my options to work with an MTS file?

Thanks! :)

Hello WhiskeyandMe,

This is the result of the smartproxy feature. If you have a powerful computer like what Ken explained, then you can just disable the smartproxy to preview the project like it was already rendered but of course the final rendered file will have a better video and audio quality than the preview.
The main purpose of the Smart Proxy feature is to have a more fluid editing experience when working with large, high resolution video files.

When you edit and preview your project, proxy files will be used as substitutes for their large video source counterparts. Whereas when you render a video file, the original video source files will be used.

Proxy files are lower resolution working copies of video files. They are reduced in resolution or compression bit rate -- to speed up editing of high definition files such as HDV and AVCHD. Proxy files are source-dependent rather than project-dependent. In other words, proxy files can be shared among different projects. Smart Proxy can also be used with other video file formats and is not limited to HD files.
To change the Smart proxy settings, please follow these steps.
1. Select Settings: Smart Proxy Manager - Settings.
2. In the Performance tab of the Preferences dialog box, you can customize Smart Proxy settings.

Thanks for updating your computer specs. However, I have some bad news for you. If your Pentium IV has hyperthreading, then it might -- just might -- squeeze through editing mts files using SmartProxy. However, even if it can do so, the final edited files, if they are still in .mts/.m2ts (also an AVCHD extension) format, your computer will NEVER be able to play them smoothly. Just can't do it. As I said above, AVCHD is the most incredibly demanding format, and Pentium IV just doesn't cut it. And believe me I know. The first time I tried editing and playing AVCHD, I was using a Pentium IV 3.0 GHz, with hyperthreading. And while it could edit it slowly with SmartProxy, it played back real jerkily. I thought that was the way it had turned out. But when I played the edited file on a then recently purchased Core 2 Duo machine, it played perfectly smoothly. So I am afraid that if you are going on editing with such video, you have really no alternative but to upgrade your computer fairly significantly.

Once again, I am glad I found this website and look forward to making movies with my VS X3...

I'm going to tag onto this thread, same problem. The video in the small preview window of VSX4 stutters badly. BUT, I can view that same m2ts file in either PhotoFunStudio (Panasonic's video viewer/editor) or the Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2011-11-11.exe viewer, full screen, with no stutter. I played with smartproxy as one post suggested, no help.

Should I expect a video editor viewer to have problems whereas a "simple" viewer to not stutter?

As you might have guessed I'm a VS newbie, made one avi to wmv and a DVD, both w/o opening the manual, that's it.

Thanks for any suggestions. :)
