Hi Abiel, just a little more. To get thru my project tonight without interruptions and loss of data from the "send dump file" error crash, I started the same project new with a .wmv file I made yesterday, a longer version. I videotaped a local orchestra and am trying to get a .wmv version down to YouTube length. Anyway, here's what I did tonight:
1. I turned off my security system.
2. I used the long version .wmv file to do the edit rather than the original VSP file.
3. Many times during the edit I saved the project as a backup and would work back and forth from the original to the backup.

So now I'm ready to save this project as a 720 HD wmv file. WMVs are smaller, I can get more on YouTube and the HD quality is good enough for me. Anyway, this was the workaround tonight and it worked.

Does ProX 3 work better with Windows 7 Pro rather than Home Premium? Or is it better with a Mac?

One thing you might want to try is to Google for a small, freeware capture program dedicated to HDV -- it's called, indicatively enough, HDVSplit as it will split incoming HDV by scene as you capture, which is somethingVS will not do. I use it quite a lot. But if you have trouble capturing with it, then it would indicate something else on your computer is causing the glitch. If, however, you can capture with HDVSplit, then we will need to look more closely at VS. But I am still mystified why you are capturing with the extension .mpg.

One thing you have still not done is to go into VS, right click on one of your captured clips, and give us ALL the Properties. That might help solve our capture mystery... I hope!!!

Ken, if you go to my Feb 6 post, you'll see attachment of .jpg shot of the properties of one of my HD clips. Can you see it?
I will try the capture software you mentioned.

Ken, I also added screen shot (.jpg) of my C drive memory status. Am I trying to work with too little memory?

thanks for any help,
Candy

Ken: I'm trying to clean up my C drive to get more space. I notice .upx files on my C drive in the Corel folder even though I captured my HD videos and saved them on my external E drive and then saved my .VSP projects also on my external E drive. The .upx files are big. If my project is done and on my external drive can I delete the .upx files without destroying the VSP files on the E drive? Will deleting the .upx files on my C drive destroy my final movie that is a WMV file? Sorry I don't know what the .upx files do. I did not know about these .upx files until I found them tonight. They appear to be the memory hogs.

thanks again

Hi Ken: I'm not giving up tonight (actually 2:34 AM), so I went ahead and deleted these huge .upx proxy files in the Corel folder. I now have 173 GB of free space on my C drive. So then I started a VS Pro X3 test project. I opened a large HD file, then put it in the proxy file manager and now when I add it to the timeline I no longer got the audio with black video. So I am so happy at least for now. We still don't know why the HD capture turns my files into .mpg but I feel like I made progress tonight just cleaning the C drive, a pretty basic concept, no? The HD files are huge compared to ones I use to capture that were SD .mov files. I didn't really know what the proxy files were but I'm getting the idea.

Sorry I never got back to you but I was out last night! Contrary to popular understanding, I don't in fact spend 24 hours a day on the Board!!

Be prepared for more .upx files, though, since they are in fact the proxy files created by SmartProxy... In X3, SmartProxy is on by default, so when you insert a new video clip in the timeline, a proxy file is automatically created... I thought they were automatically deleted, but I guess that is only after they have been used and applied to the original video. So if you haven't been doing that, then I guess they have built up.

You can turn SmartProxy off in Settings > Preferences > Performance and unticking the top box.

Thanks Ken,
Can you do me a favor and give a brief explanation of what the proxy file is in Pro X3? I tried finding a definition on the internet but it got too confusing.

thanks again,
Candy

It's actually pretty simple. Some high definition videos have very demanding formats, and AVCHD is top of this list. Many computers are not powerful enough to edit or even play it in real time. So to make things simpler, VS will make standard definition copies of the high definition videos when you insert them, usually of a fairly low frame size. But that doesn't matter. You edit these as though you were editing the high definition originals. And when you finish editing the low quality ones, all the edits are then applied to the high definition originals and a new high definition video with all the edits is produced. Saves a lot of hassle, particularly with AVCHD.

Ken, so if I wasn't adding my files to the Proxy Manager list, then I was trying to work on them in full size, i.e. 10 GB which one of them was, which accounted the reason for some crashes, black video?

So after I open them and add them to the library do I have to right click and add them to the proxy manager each time I add one to the library? I was never doing this.

thanks again,

If you have SmartProxy enable by default in Settings, then each time you Insert a HD video, a proxy file is automatically created, though it can take time...

Ken Berry wrote: And another unfortunate truth is that different computers use different types of BIOS, so once you have gotten into yours, just search through the different tabs until you see 'Hyperthreading', and it should be Enabled. Toggle that to Disable, then save and exit BIOS and start the computer up again. The klutzy thing about this solution is that you would need to do it each time you used X3, unless you leave hyperthreading permanently disabled. But it is a key feature associated with the i7, and it's probably not a good idea to deny other programs its benefits.

Are you kidding me? I have just purchased VS Pro X3, delivered today and not yet installed. Are you saying that it is not compatible with Intel i7 processors without editing the Bios each time??? Is this only a problem rendering to HD or will it also be problematic rendering HD MP4 files to SD DVD?
