Hi, appreciate if you guys can enlighten me on expected behaviour of display characteristics for edit/preview under VS8 / 9 ...
I have P4 / XP Pro with Radeon 9200 (dual head): LCD display connected to DVI output (primary display) and CRT monitor connected to VGA output (secondary display), both working perfectly at 1280 x 1024 resolution. Of course the Windows workspace now spans across the 2 monitors.
Under INSTANT PLAYBACK TARGET settings:
I've tried all but one mode which worked as expected, PREVIEW WINDOW (OK), DV CAMCORDER (OK), PREVIEW WINDOW and DV CAMCORDER (OK); but DUAL HEAD DEVICE is no different from PREVIEW WINDOW which sends the image out thru the default preview window.
Doesn't it, as the mode suggests, sends out the preview image to perhaps the secondary display on the dual head device? Or is my hardware setup incapable of supporting VS8/9 on that front?
Thanks in advance.

Using the ATI video card under the display properties you set the modes
that you want. Then the external video programs access that mode.
Not just ulead, but any video program, like Windvd will play the video full
screen on the 2nd monitor or television.
I believe ATI calls it "Theatre mode". There are a few modes to choose from.
When you go to the "Advanced" setup in the video settings windows the
options is under one of the display tabs.
It's a small icon under one of the tabs that says "Clone Mode" or similiar.
It's in that screen that you tell the display card how to handle the 2nd
attached monitor for multi-media devices.
One of the biggest uses of that is to output via the s-video/composite connector to a television. Using VS you can view your editing in progress on
a TV.
Do not access the ATI hardware interface screen while another program
is also accessing the 2nd attached video device. Make the changes in
the ATI setup and then open VS or your dvd player.
Hope this helps,

Will give it a try.
Tks MD. Cool! will try it out shortly ...
But just a follow-up to that, would this setting upset the expanded workspace where I'd run other programs over the width of the 2 screens?

No, not really. Depends which program your running in the foreground
that forces the 2nd monitor to fullscreen video.
You can try ATI hydravision and make about 4 virtual screens that you can
switch between.
The last time I tried that the video stayed on top on all the screens.
NVidia cards are better for virtual screens (and much more).
But, with 4 virtual screens that will give you alot of desktop space to
work with.

Tks to MD, your input is spot on and valuable.
Tried the different configs, Clone Mode, Theater Mode, etc., and yes UVS can indeed set the preview out to the 2nd dual head device, which in my case, is not a TV connected to the S-Video port, but a 21-inch CRT connected to the VGA connector.
Here's my observation ...
1. You can either operate the display adapter in CLONE Mode/Theater Mode OR as an Extended Desktop but not simultaneously. The latter is something I need.
2. Although I usually runs the CRT at 1280x1024 / 85hz refresh, the CLONE Mode locks the output to 60hz (the CRT's refresh flickering is really conspiciously). But it does give a full-screen Preview.
So ... for anyone, who primarily connects a TV as the 2nd device, the above setup is pretty much perfect for PREVIEWing your UVS project edits.
In my case, I need the expanded workspace for other applications that I'm running.
My tks to MD again.

Mel,
On another machine I use a Nvidia 6600GT agp along with an ATI pci
analog capture tv/card.
That video card will do what you want.
The NVidia configuration screens are far different than ATI's but
after you learn them you can make as many virtual screens and
desktops as limited by memory.
The virtual screens with the NVidia 6600GT don't interfere with each other.
You can easily switch between them and have multiple apps open at the
sametime.
The only way I've gotten this to work with ATI cards is 2 cards installed, a
pci card. But, it's not good to share a pci video irq interrupt. XP will do it but
another item on the pci bus may have problems such as an external
firewire/usb device. Depends on the motherboard.

Hi MD,
Thanks for all the different scenarios suggested. I will surely try out different modes and the virtual screens on some apps that I run.
But for one, I need to see the dual screen expanded workspace at once. My work involves intensive use of multitrack sound editing, therefore my usual setup is having the audio tracks view on one screen and the mixer and effects view on another simultaneously when I record or edit.
I've tried Hydravision and the 4 virtual screens setup; but it'll be cycling thru the 4 individual screens. But I'm sure, I'd find a use for it with other programs I have in mind.
Tks, you've been a great help.
