Which Software to Use

Post by Bert524 »

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forums and have a question. I would like to create several small AVI clips from one rather large .VOB file, which I recorded on my Sony Handicam. (It's a basketball game, and I just need a few clips of my niece making some baskets!) I intend to put these clips into a slideshow which supports AVI, MPEG, and several other formats.

I am wondering whether Corel DVD Copy 6 would allow me to edit several small AVI clips out of one large VOB file to use in my slideshow.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

First, by 'small avi' I assume you are talking about something like DivX/XVids...? I ask because there are over 800 different video formats which use the .avi extension. (It is only a wrapper extension, and the original, uncompressed .avi is huge -- 65 GB per hour of video.)

As far as DVD Copy 6 is concerned, I no longer have it on my computers, so cannot say for sure. But I rather doubt it could be used for the purpose you are after. I would suggest instead you would need to use a more sophisticated editing program such as Corel Video Studio.

You will need to import from the original DVD to get the relevant .vob using the Insert Digital Media command in Video Studio. An alternative would be simply to copy the vob to your computer and change the extension to .mpg. Then simply insert that in the VS timeline and edit out the bits you don't like.

Then, when you have what you are after, you select Share > Create Video File > Custom. You select AVI as the format, then click on the Options button. In the dialogue box which appears, click on the Compression tab and select DivX/XVid as the format, and you can configure it if you need to using the Configure button...

Hello Bert524,

I would suggest that you either use DVD Movie Factory 7 or VideoStudio Pro x3, these program allows you to combine all small AVI that you have to one whole video file and even create a DVD.

If you want to do a test drive you can download the trial version at http://www.corel.com/trials
