VS9 Newbie audio help

Post by Trikie »

Making an all stills project I want to add a commentary on some of them. I'm using a mic that plugs into the PC's mic socket and I know it works as I've tested it with Windows Moviemaker.

VS9 Record Voice brings up a screen Adjust Volume with an instruction to "use Windows audio mixer and monitor the level meter above to set the recording volume"

I don't know how to get to the Windows audio mixer, and the slider on the level in the screen does not function. I presume this is because I haven't set the Windows first. How do I do this?

In the bottom right of your Windows screen, among other icons there should be one that looks like a little speaker. Right click on that and it should show Mixer in the menu that appears. Select that and a new screen should appear showing the programs you have open -- including VS. I am now pushing things to remember what might be in the XP Mixer set-up but look for any tab or input which says Mic... and make sure it is active and adjust its volume with the slider control under it. You should also be able to access the Mixer by double left clicking the same icon in the bottom right of screen; or by going into Control Panel > Sound.

I should add, by the way, that I never use the in-built recording facility in VS. It is very basic, though should work. Instead, I use a third party audio editing application -- either the freeware Audacity or Nero's Wave Editor. Either will give you much better control over your voice-overs or music tracks...

Thanks Ken, Found the icon but it's for Realtek HD Audio Manager. I'll give it a try.

Now realised that Realtek is part of Windows. Found recording had been disabled, now sorted and recording OK.

Thanks for the guidance.
