Best Update for JASC Paint Shop Photo Album 4

Post by phasti »

From the subject you can see I'm using very old versions of the Paint Shop programs (I also use JASC Paint Shop Pro 8) before Corel took over. These programs are from the 2003/2004 time frame.

I'm now using a new Windows 7 top of the line PC (i7-870) and the Microsoft Compatibility web site doesn't even recognize these JASC products, only some of them after they became Corel property.

The software seems to run OK under Windows 7 but when I access a photo, I get a curious error indicating problems submitting a command to the Paint Shop program but I basically ignore it, plow onward and it seems to work ok.

However, considering I'm using software 6/7 years old, I'm thinking I should maybe upgrade. I need a Corel techie/salesman to tell me which Corel program to upgrade to. Remember, I'm upgrading from JASC Paintshop Photo Album 4 and Paintshop Pro 8. I need the best upgrade to both programs which will not require a total relearning of the software, something as close to those original products as possible. I don't need bells and whistles. I just need what those 2 programs provide.

Once Corel took over, what did they recommend as the best transition from those 2 JASC products to Corel products. I'm sure initially they just put their name on the products but over time, they added content. How did the products transition to what you are recommending now?

Thanks, Phasti

Hello phasti,

If you are a JASC Paintshop Photo Album 4 and Paintshop Pro 8, you can upgrade to PaintShop Photo Pro X3 and PaintShop Photo Express 2010. I high recommend that you try to download the trial first, to evaluate if these program meet your needs.

You can download the trial via http://www.corel.com/trials.

As far as how X3 would compare with your current version.

I'm not familiar with your version so I can't really speak to that. Some new things you might like, some you might not. I know the graphite interface has upset a few people especially with some of the symbols being hard to see. But you can turn that off for the most part.

A few commands have either been replaced or hidden that you might be used to. So if you want them back you need to go into the menu and fish around for them. Go to View->Customize and under the Unused Commands list you can find commands that have been hidden away. You can then drag these back into the menus or onto a toolbar of your own making. You can even give them keyboard short-cuts if you want to.
