is it possible to reduce degree of nudging (w/ arrow keys)?

Post by ellenelle »

I am working with images that I need to position very precisely for an animation, and I am finding that even with using the arrow keys for nudging, sometimes it is too much. Is there any way to reduce the distance an image will move when nudged by an arrow key?

Thanks,
Ellen

Hello ellenelle,

Yes, there is. You may want to use the MOVE option of the PICKER TOOL. This way the object that is currently selected can be move using the arrow keys.

Thank you, but unfortunately the move tool is giving me the same problem: it seems that all these tools (the pick tool, the object selector, the move tool) will nudge an image no less than one pixel at a time. I'm wondering if there is a way to reduce that to 1/2 pixel or less.

No, the arrow keys always nudge 1 pixel or more, not less. And from there they only nudge 10 pixels if you're holding the Ctrl key and 100 pixels if you're holding the Shift key.

There is no 1/2 pixel movement in Paint Shop Pro. At least none that I've ever known about. Vectors do snap to the center of a pixel but that's not the same thing as moving it half a pixel. So, no there is no way to do that with nudging.

Try the following to see what happens:-

Set the View Grid Properties for the "current image settings" to 1 Pixel Horizontal & Vertical and for the Snap Influence.
View the Grid with "Snap to Grid" unchecked.
Draw a Vector Object.
Zoom in to the maximum (5000%)
Change to 'Move' and Move the Vector around.
You cannot place it across 1/2 pixels.

I find this the best way to place an object to single Pixel accuracy :)

I'm confused, Tadjio, Ellenelle wants to use half pixels or less. The problem is that Paint Shop Pro always uses full pixels, which makes sense because in some cases an animation may move but not a full pixel in length. And Ellenelle said it was for an animation.

Would it be worth the extra effort to resize the image to twice it's size first? Then moving one pixel would be half what you could have done before.

I'm soory if I am confusing you. I wanted to cover several issues in one example.

Yes, PSP uses full (whole) pixels and, as I said, "You cannot place it across 1/2 pixels".
I think the Move Tool is the best way to "reduce degree of nudging (w/arrow keys)" as you can adjust down to a single pixel.
If you zoom in to the maximum (5000%) you can adjust a vector with the left/right/up/down key by a single pixel.

I have tried re-sizing to double the number of pixels but there are two problems.
Firstly, Re-size distorts the vector so it doesn't appear like the original and
secondly, when you re-size down again, the result is still adjusted to the nearest pixel.
