Resolution

Post by jim »

Hi,

I've sent some photos to a local magazine for them to print but they have replied, "I can't use the photos as they are; they are only low resolution suitable for use on the web. Can you send me a high resolution version".

How do I do this? I am using PI10.

Thanks for any help you can give me...Jim

Changing Resolution is not difficult, but what kind of photos were they?

Did you by any change compress them and send by Web?

Typically a Magazine would like to have between 133 dpi and 160 dpi resolution, some want 170 to 180, and like to have them in a File Format that is not compressed. Photoshop will do in most cases, a PSD File Format. Ulead can also save in this format.

If your images were downloaded from a DC, they had to have been set to High Resolutuion and uncompressed before you took them, or you have low resolution images.

If you scanned them into the computer, again the software setting determines what File Type and the Resolution. Typically newer devices scan at a medium resolution to a compressed File format. Which is usually not good enough for Mag consumption. Scanning slides is done at 2400 to 4800 dpi for a Mag.

What File Type and What Resolution did you send the Mag? And did you ask them what Resolution and what File type they typically require?

If you open you images in a Photo Editor, and your resolution is correct, or at least above 133 dpi, then doing a Save As in the correct file Format should be enough. If not you will have to provide more info.

The photograph was taken by a friend & emailed to me. It has a resolution of 96 pixels/inch, the file format is JPEG file interchange format. The data type is RGB true color (24 bit). Width 1024 pixels, width 768 pixels.

Do I just go to Adjust>Resolution, then move the user-defined slider to a new setting & save the photo?

Thanks for your help...Jim

Unfortunately your Photo is History as a 96 dpi JPG, there is no real way you can turn it into a High resolution image, without spending big bucks for a graphic software interpolation program.

When you try to change or increase the resolution on an already compressed image it will stretch the Pixels and cause the pixels in the image to appear with jagged edges.

So, have your friend send a new image to you using this method. Save the image in, or scan at 360 dpi in BMP format, if they have Ulead or Photoshop then save the file in PSD format. Then ZIP the file and send it to you by e-mail. Mind you it will be a big one, and it might be better if your firend puts the image on CD and does Snail Mail.

That's the "Mag World," they are never satisfied!!

Hi,

That means that you don't have what you need to give the mag. On a good day, with a great image and no compression, a mag could sqeeze a 5"x3" image from what you have - and it is a jpeg (compressed), and it might not be optimum at that.

Ask your friend to scan at a high resolution, I'd likely do the maximum native resolution of the scanner.

The image might be too large for email. Have your friend post it to a web site so you can download it.
