Updater and java problems
Hi
Just bought new HP Laptop which comes with PSPP X3 preinstalled. Finished installing all my programs and decided to try PSP out. Click the link and small taskbar window appears which is unreadable. The program hangs for about half a minute (Timeout?) and then the program loads and the taskbar window disappears. Tried to access the Update check in"Help" and I get a the "Cannot access this web page" error message which is what I suspect the original taskbar window also says. (Does PSP automatically check for updates when opened).
When the program opens I then try to access the online help and I get a java error message.
I have reinstalled PSP 3 times now and it remains the same and java 32 and 64 bit versions are installed and latest versions. Also installed manually the 4 updates available.
Anybody any idea? I emailed Corel Support and they came back with "Your problem would be better dealt with by phone" so I spent 40 minutes holding on only to be told that they would not help as it was an OEM version. They referred me here.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Regards Alan

Re: Updater and java problems
Sorry you are having trouble. I can't help with the Java error, but here's a link where you can download a pdf copy of the user guide http://corel.custhelp.com/app/answers/d ... _id/764421
I don't know of a way to stop PSP from checking for updates, but there is a setting where you can prevent the program from downloading the update. In the Help menu, click on Corel Guide and on the top right of the screen there is a gear icon (settings). Click on this and select Message Preferences and un-tick the box for downloading free updates. I don't know if this will stop the program from "calling home" but it should stop the download.

Hello Alan,
You may also want to download all the updates to make sure your program is updated. You can download all updates from this link: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 0460544373

Re: Updater and java problems
Hi Abiel
I have done the 4 downloaded updates as I said in my original post and they unfortunately made no difference. Thanks for taking the time to reply though.
Hi Kathy
OK I d/l'd the IB for future use however your other suggestion is not available as Help/Corel Guide is one of the functions which give me a Javascript error. The window comes up with the gear icon at the top but no window contents. The icon is also not active at all. Nice try and thanks anyway.

Alan,
Originally you mentioned a Java error, but in your most recent post, you said it's a javascript error. They're two different animals and I'm not the best person to explain the differences, but. . . just a shot in the dark - do you have javascript disabled in your browser(s)?

Re: Updater and java problems
I don't believe there is a way for a user to correct a script error within the program. There are a couple Corel employees who visit this forum and may be able to offer a suggestion based on your screen print of the error message.
You mentioned PSP was pre-installed by HP - did they include an installation disc with the computer as the fix might be to uninstall/reinstall? You could also try contacting HP Support - I've had decent luck with them in the past.

Re: Updater and java problems
Kathy_9, they did mention already attempting to uninstall and reinstall the program as one of their methods for fixing the problem.
Also, normally normally you would be correct about not being able to fix a javascript error inside a program but look at the error given. This is not a javascript error inside Paint Shop Pro. The javascript error is with the HTML file that is being read by the messaging system. In this case the link to the javascript file is given on your system. You can technically change this yourself if you wanted to.
It looks like Paint Shop Pro uses the Windows default Web Viewer control for its messaging system. So it's directly tied into Internet Explorer.
I can't say as to why you're getting this error but since it appears to use IE as its default viewer for its HTML files you will need to make sure that IE is updated and that javascript is enabled for it. (IE is Internet Explorer just in case you weren't familiar with the shorthand)
Try updating IE first and see if that fixes your problem.
If that did not fix the problem try Abiel's most common suggestion. Reset the workspace.
Shift+Click on the Paint Shop Pro Icon and it should ask you if you really want to reset the workspace. Say yes, and see if that changes anything.
If that doesn't work you can attempt to fix the javascript by forcing Paint Shop Pro to re-create the files from scratch....well semi-scratch.
The other option, not suggested but possible, is to follow the file path and go ahead and rename the message cache.
It's located in your AppData folder, which is a hidden folder, so you will have to make sure you can view hidden folders before you continue. Open up your account folder (Cath in this case) hit Alt to get the menu bar and go to Tools -> Folder Options.
On the dialog that pops-up go ahead and select the View tab. In the long list there you should see an area for Hidden FIles and Folders. Select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives." Then hit OK.
You should now see the semi-transparent "AppData" folder in the Cath folder. Now just follow the path.
c:\Users\Cath\AppData\Roaming\Corel\
Rename the "Messages" folder to "Messages Backup". When Paint SHop Pro opens and it doesn't find the Messages folder it will attempt to recreate it and hopefully fix the problem from there.
Three options, let us know what happens.

Re: Updater and java problems
Hi
Thanks for the long analysis of the problem which on a quick scan looks promising. I will have a further look at it in detail tomorrow as it is nearly midnight here. Thanks very much.

Re: Updater and java problems
Hi
Had a few minutes to check out your suggestions.
Actually although I have IE on the machine the default browser is ChromePlus.
IE and Chrome are both fully updated and java/javascript is enabled in IE and is integral with ChromePlus.
Clicking the PSP Icon with Shift pressed does not actually do anything at all. I then opened PSP and went into the Options and reset the Workplaces location to within My Docs\PSP. Rebooted, no change.
How do I force PSP to recreate the files from scratch.
I located the message folder and renamed it Messages old and restarted PSP. The initial hang and taskbar icon problem did not occur and the folder was re-created.
Opened PSP again and checked "Updates" - still "Can't open this location" and the "Corel Guide" and "Learn More" did absolutely nothing, no error message at all.
So to sum up it's "1 down and 3 to go"
Any other ideas would be gratefully accepted.
Regards and thanks. Alan

Re: Updater and java problems
Have you tried changing your default browser to IE, just to see if maybe it might be an issue with PSP and Google Chrome? I don't use either, I use FF, and Vista, but have never seen this.

Hi Ron
Tried it but it made no difference at all, even tried it with Firefox as default.
Thanks anyway. Alan

Re: Updater and java problems
@alanrwood
The message "cannot access website" appears because you are user on your machine.
The fact that in Start - Control Panel - User accounts your user name has "Administrator" as description doesn't mean you have administrative access. You are still user, however you have administrative rights to change the user settings. The only way to get full administrator access on Vista/Windows 7 is by turning of the User Account Control and right-click on a program, patch or update and go to "Run as Administrator".
Windows 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Wind ... -on-or-off
The second problem is that you can't remove PSPX3 simply through the Control Panel. You have to follow these instructions:
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... ed#p205434
If you are still experiencing problems with PSPPX3 (I don't mean the Guide menu or help) then:
1. Remove PSPPX3 by following the instructions above
2. Set the Internet Explorer to your default browser that the help launches the first time.
3. Reinstall PSPPX3 and launch it as as administrator!
Normally it should work now.
If you want to change the UAC back, give the user full administrative rights to work with PSPPX3.
If only the User guide doesn't work, then try this one:
1. Switch the language in File - Preferences to the UK version (you are using the International English version). Restart PSPPX3 and test if the User guide comes up.
If the UK version works fine, copy the folder inside the EN version and paste it into the IE version.
It might be that the IE and EN version have different "MassagesCache" folders and their structure is different. If you don't mind, then use the UK version of PSPX3. If you have got a language version, which works fine, create a backup, so that you can replace it every time.
If you don't have a multi-language version (your PSPPX3 is an OEM version), then reinstall the whole program as described above.
