Video file is silent
I'm trying to use VideoStudio X2 to burn to DVD a file that I’ve downloaded to my laptop from my hard disk set top box . When I play the file in VideoStudio it's silent (whether or not I’ve added it to the timeline). However when I view the file (a .ts ) in Windows Media Player it has sound.
If I view other .ts video files in VideoStudio they do have sound, which suggests the sound for my laptop and VideoStudio aren't completely muted.
I've attached a screen shot that shows the audio file properties as well as other settings.
I'm guessing that I've done something silly, but I can't work out what.
Regards,
Michael
Specs:
Software: Pro X2 (VideoStudio v12.0.96.1)
Toshiba Satellite L500-1WG
Windows 7, Home Premium, 64 bit
Pentium Dual Core CPU, T4400, 2.2GHz, 4 GB RAM
Video type: PAL

Since it was recorded in Mono, have you tried checking to see if maybe the balance was set to Left or Right only? Try dropping it into the timeline, and then go to Audio View (Speaker Icon, to the right of the Storyboard, and Timeline View), is it showing a wav-graph?
When you play it in your media player are you getting the audio through both speakers?

Re: Video file is silent
Many thanks for the suggestions:
i) I've looked at the balance, as per the screenshots & both speakers are set up for sound (ie both had a value of 92)
ii) I've checked and sound is coming out of both speakers.
ii) When I drop the video file onto the timeline & click the audio view I don't get a wave pattern at all, just a straight red line & a straight green line.
Regards,
Michael

Re: Video file is silent
This may another problem that VS X2 has with Win7. It started out with missing buttons in the burn module GUI. Have you installed Service Pack 2 ? It is suppose to correct problems with Win7 compatibility. If you have not manually updated MS DirectX try updating it as well.

Hi
As it’s using Mono audio, have you tried Duplicating the audio Channel.
Place the clip in the timeline and select the Attribute tab.

Re: Video file is silent
Thanks again for the suggestions.
I've downloaded the Service Pack and also updated DirectX. No joy I'm afraid.
I've had a look at duplicating the audio, but must admit I don't know what to do after I've put it in the timeline & clicked on the attribute tab (I'm not really a frequent user).

Michael

Hi Michael
Just out of interest try creating a sound file of the video clip.
Share --create sound file

In Audio VIew clicking on the attribute tab, you should see Duplicate Audio and beneath it Left and Right. Check the box beside Duplicate audio, and then select Left or Right. VS will provide a duplicate of your audio to which one you select. So you would be able to hear audio in both the left and right speakers.

Re: Video file is silent
Hi Michael
Looking at the video properties they are a little strange.
They are MTS, normally associated with HD, the bit rate of 15000kbps is HD, but the frame size is 704 x 576 a Pal size I think.
The aspect ratio is 4:3 again a standard size but not normally used with HD, Viewing the preview screen I would have expected 16:9, given that the faces look a little elongated.
Then the audio is Mono.
I don’t think any of these properties go together, certainly not to create a compliant video file.
All in all it’s a good mix.
I suggest you check your settings when creating/exporting the video from the hard disk set top box.

Re: Video file is silent
I tried creating a sound file. The file wasn't empty, but it was still silent when it played, which I don't really understand.
I also had a go at the "Duplicate Audio Channel" as suggested. However it was still silent when played.
As this seemed not to make much sense I had a go at burning to DVD using the method I used to use before I bought VideoStudio (ProjectX and GUI for DVD) and it worked first time. I don't understand why, but as I've now managed to burn it to DVD (albeit not quit as neatly) I guess it'll have to remain a mystery for the moment. I think if the problem happens again I might try a re-install of VideoStudio.
Many thanks for the helpful suggestions - much appreciated.
