DivX Codecs EULA

Post by Shim »

DivX codec EULA;

NO TRANSCODING : You are prohibited from using the software with software or hardware products whose purpose is to “Transcode” or convert DivX video or DivX media format content into another format.

How viable/realistic are these options;

1 – Ignore the above EULA
2 – Corel pay money to a shoddy development team for the rights to implement DivX in its software and then outlay further funding in the development of DivX
3 – The end of DivX

I am certainly not telling what or what not to do, but how many people record television shows, sporting events, or commercial video tapes, ignoring the copyright warnings in the process?

Leaving aside the question of the EULA, I am not sure what you are getting at in your point 2. I for one (though maybe I am just lucky) have no trouble using the DivX codec with Video Studio, to produce high quality DivX output files. I can also convert from DivX to mpeg-2 or other formats, though for the most part I have given up doing so since I have never really seen the point in going from DivX's high quality though highly compressed format, to a less compressed format with a concomitant quality hit, pixelation etc...
