using the text tool

Post by honeysmom »

When I am done with the text tool I click the apply button, then I can't get to any other tool. It is like it is frozen ...until I close it out. Am I doing something wrong or what? Also I am wondering what the trick is (or whatever :) ) on flattening layers. I am a novice with psp so maybe I am just doing something wrong, but I can't find any answers in the manual.

I don't experience the text tool problem so I'm of no help there. Unless you can supply more information.

As for flattening layers, it's called merging layers. Just right-click on a layer that you would like to merge down into the layer below and in the menu select Merge->Merge Down.

You can also Merge All (flatten), Merge Visible (only the layers that are showing), or Merge a Layer Group.

This is what I do...I open psp..open a pic I want to work on. The 1st thing I use is the text tool. I have no problem using it, when I am done with the text, I click the "apply" button. Then, when I want to switch to some other tool, or just save it; I can't do anything else. I have to close it out to even save it. All the other tools, or options are like useless, they look like they are "blacked" out ( unclickable) , rather than being "white" ( clickable). I am sorry if I am not using the right "language", but I am learning this stuff all by myself. I have trouble remembering things like vectors and rasters etc. I have used psp a little, a few years back and never had this much trouble.
Is there something I should be doing , besides clicking apply, to switch to other tools , when I am done with the text tool ? I have looked and looked through my manual, and can't find anything to tell me what I need to do , or what I am doing wrong. If I could just get past this one stupid problem , I believe I would be able to keep learning psp , easily. Thank you for any help you can give me. Have a wonderful Day !

honeysmom:

After you choose the apply button, double click outside the text, you created, with the left mouse button and that should clear it up. The same thing happened to me.

Let me know how it goes.

I've noticed too that the text tool in X3 is different than X2. Once I add my text and click the apply button, my other tool buttons are re-enabled but only if I do not click on my image. If you do happen to click on the image, the other tools are grayed out and the only way to re-enable them is to click on the button next to the apply button (light blue round button with white arrow). At least this is what works for me.

Hey Kathy_9: :)

First: The button you're referring to as the "(light blue round button with white arrow)" is called the cancel changes or reset button.

Second: After clicking the apply button, PSP gives you a blinking cursor, because it thinks you are ready to type more text. So, to get out of that mode, double click on any text you have typed. This will re-enable other tools.

Third: I would suggest you take a look at LeviFiction's PSP X3 YouTube channel, on using the text tool. He does an excellent job of explaining this tool, shows how it works, and is also a member of this forum. Be sure to catch parts 1 and 2. Here is the Link: LeviFiction's Text Tool

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks princess, appreciate your suggestions, but I wasn't having trouble with the text tool; just trying to explain how the behavior differs from earlier versions and hopefully help honeysmom. I didn't call the cancel changes button by name but rather described it in case she didn't know it by name.
