Creating & burning BDMV and AVCHD folders with DMF 7 SE ?

Post by brouillette »

How can I burn the folders created at Step 3 of DMF 7 SE on a disc ?

in AVCHD mode :
1. the folders are created in a folder named "AVCHD" (that consists of a BDMV sub-folder) . Do I have to burn the AVCHD folder on the disc or just the BDMV folder (that is a sub folder of the AVCHD folder created) ?

2. if I use Nero to burn AVCHD folders on a DVD, what type of DVD format do I have to select ? DVD-Video? (the AVCHD folders do not contain any VIDEO_TS files)? DVD-ROM(ISO)? DVD-ROM(UDF)? DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO)?

in Blu-ray mode :
the folders created are in a folder named BDMV. Is it what I have to burn on a blu-ray disc (the BDMV folder or just the sub-folders) ?

Why are you not burning the various folders directly to disc in MF 7?

As far as I am aware, you cannot just burn either folder to a disc as you would if making a data disc. The program has to be capable of burning hybrid discs or Blu-Rays so the necessary code is inserted on the disc at the beginning of the burn.

I am not totally sure about Nero as I have never used it to burn either type of disc. But if are wanting to burn something which is already in a BDMV folder structure, it has to be an ISO disc image file (.iso) rather than a disc folder. Then you use Nero Vision and choose 'Open Saved Project or Disc Image'. Otherwise, you have to use your original AVCHD and Import that using either Nero Vision's AVCHD > DVD or Blu-Ray > Blu-Ray disc options...

By the way Ken, thanks for your advice on the Blu-ray burner...allows me to delay that investment...! :D

in SD DVD mode , I could create an image file (this is to me the easiest way of keeping a backup and duplicating a DVD movie in the future if I don't have access to the components/compiled videos) , or as an alternative create DVD folders (Video_TS folders) that I could then Drag & Drop in Nero under a DVD-Video format to burn copies easily later on.

in AVCHD mode, there are no image creation possible from what I can see (greyed out in DMF 7 SE) so I thought "Create AVCHD Folders" was similar for AVCHD as creating Video_TS folders was for DVD , thus my query .

I know that if I save my DMF 7 SE project (.dwz file) I can bring it back with DMF 7 SE in the future to burn a disc but it will require that I still have my added media available to DMF 7 SE to rebuild the project components before burning.

Is there a way to create AVCHD folders only at this time and then have DMF 7 SE burn a disc later by using only the former AVCHD folders created before if the project components/videos are not available anymore ?

Frankly, I am not sure. As I say, Nero requires an ISO file and as you have found, MF 7 will not create an AVCHD/Blu-Ray ISO file... The only option I can think of would be ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com/) which is a handy little freeware program that claims to be able to burn Blu-Ray folders at least:
You can use it to build DVD Video discs (from a VIDEO_TS folder), HD DVD Video discs (from a HVDVD_TS folder) and Blu-ray Video discs (from a BDAV / BDMV folder) with ease.
As you will see, AVCHD hybrid discs are not mentioned specifically. However, BDAV is, if I recall correctly, the format used by hybrid discs, though I am not 100% certain that it does not also cover proper Blu-Ray discs burned using the original AVCHD video, instead of converting it to Blu-Ray mpeg-2 format.

(I should confess here that I am rather hazy on the distinctions between BDAV and BDMV... I have seen various explanations which often contradict each other. In some, BDMV is said to be a commercial Blu-Ray movie format -- thus the MV. Others say the M stands for Menu, but MF 7 AVCHD hybrid discs support menus... Yet others say that BDAV is the Blu-Ray format used for non-commercial video, and that its format is limited to mpeg-2, though I think that explanation pre-dates the arrival of AVCHD mpeg-4!! If anyone can point me to a definitive, up-to-date guide on this, I would be grateful...)

But given that ImgBurn is a freeware program, the easiest would be to download it and see. It just might be able to handle a hybrid disc folder... On the other hand, it might see it as a Blu-Ray folder and require a Blu-Ray burner and disc...
