WMV files in VideoStudio

Post by Leif G »

Video Studio supports Windows Media too, according to the program information.
But there are some problems with that,as I have discovered.
I am using a program for some pre-editing,and it can only output to WMV. When I want to insert one
of these clips I get the following message: "The file xxx.WMV cannot be edited.Do you want to perform
pre-process to make it editable?" I click yes,and it goes through this, whatever it is,and the clip
shows up in the library.
The curious thing however is that it only works with one file at a time. I have to close the program and
open it again to be able to insert the next .wmv file, and so on for every clip. A bit boring to do it like this,
but luckily I usually work with fairly short projects.
I discovered though that after the proxyfiles have been created, the .wmv files can be inserted without
problem, but then I've not much use for it.
Another problem with these .wmv files is that the audio is missing, I don't know why. I should write to the
people who created the program I suppose.
I have to extract the audio from my original m2ts files, and put them in the editor and combine video and
audio that way.
But there are still more problems. Replay in the projekt is often jerky and stops, wich I suspect has to do
with the proxyfiles. They might not work as they should with .wmv files, or it could be something with these
special files I am using.
According to the info I have they are: Windows Media Video 9,Advanced Profile.

And I have to say that after all the trouble,I can render them to AVCHD,
they play well and no problem with transitions. Perhaps support here have any ideas about this?

By the way, glad to read that someone had used VS pro in Windows 7,and that it worked well.
I am going to upgrade to 7 from XP, it feels a bit daunting, and means a lot of work.
I think I better finish my editing in XP first, and be very careful with backup.

Hi

It seems a strange step to convert the MTS files to WMV then convert to AVCHD/Mpeg.

Why don’t you simply edit the MTS files?

There are many WMV profiles and indeed you can create your own.
If your WMV are not compliant/standard then VS may have problems.

You don’t give any details of your video files properties.

If you have to convert, then view the WMV HD profiles that VS creates you may be able to use those settings for your conversion.

You don’t say which version of Video Studio you are using?

It would also be useful to know exactly what "pre-editing" you need to do, and why. There could be alternatives. But I agree that it is totally strange to go from AVCHD to WMV and then, via proxy files (I assume using SmartProxy) back to final AVCHD again...

¨ Hello Ken
Yes,I thought someone might ask about the pre-editing. It is simply that I use a program for stabilizing my video clips.
There are several programs around, one for instance that can be used in VideoStudio, but I haven't been able to make it
work,so I prefer this other one(no need to mention the name of it).
I use it,because as everyone who are filming with a handheld camera knows,it's nearly impossible to hold the camera steady enough. It might look good in editing, but when seen on a TV it's not pretty.
And although there are several alternatives for output, for some reason it only works with .wmv, and I don't know what special profile they are. How do I find out?
I wasn't avare that such a thing as profiles could be used. I am still fairly new with the VS ProX3.
Can't remember having seen anything about it in the help manual?
It sounds interesting, can you tell me how they are used?

My only alternative is to use the .wmv files, and when rendering the projekt I can't use "same as first clip" obviously
(my original files are the Canon MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) and of the other I choose AVCHD PAL/HD1920 as it most closely resembles my original files. And as I said, except for the editing trouble,it works well after that.

Hi

You say you have to convert the original video file but don’t explain why?

What version of Video Studio are you using?

What problems are you seeing when using the Canon MPEG-4 files. Maybe we should address that first.

WMV profiles. With a clip in the timeline
Go to Share Create Video File-Custom
Choose save as type as WMV
Click the Options button
The following window shows a Profile tab, view the drop down box.

Many of the WMV profiles are installed on the pc by installing Windows Media Player and Windows Media Encoder.

Your WM video file, from the VS timeline.
Right click and select properties, these show the settings used to create your file.

If you have to convert?
Video Studio has a batch convert option, maybe you should explore this option to convert the MPEG 4 files.

Have you experimented with the 'anti-shake' filter in VideoStudio - does that not remove the camera shake from your video ? so that you can stay with your original video files.

Hi Trevor and Brian
I am using VideoStudio ProX3.
I am not having any particular problem with the Canon MPEG-4 files,
and I did not say that I had to convert my original files.
What I say is that I need this anti-shake program to make my video look better, and the clips can only be
saved to WMV. I may try to sort this out with the people who created the program.
But thank you for your advice about profiles. I have never tried custom settings,so had not seen the profiles.

In answer to Brian, yes I had a try with the FX anti-shake,but could not figure out how to use it.
I got some very strange results. Where is the instructions how to use it?
I have also tried another plug-in program, wich I found not very satisfactory, too much trial and error.
Still another program I tested as a plug-in in Vegas Pro(trial). It came close to my expectations, but not close enough.

You have to aim high haven't you, otherwise what's the point of buying an expensive HD camera?
