Organizer Search

Post by trvlnmny »

I have recently installed Paint Shop Photo X3. I am also using Windows 7 Home.
I am new to this product and any other graphic product. I do have some experience with Auto Cad.
I am therefore introducing myself to the product by following a manual.
I am on the Organizer Screen and attempting to do a search using the Find text box.
As soon as I type in the first letter of my search word the search begins before I can enter the rest of the search word.
I don't know if I am doing something wrong or if there is a problem with Paint Shop.
Also the pictures that are returned are from folders other than the one I chose.
Thanks for any and all help.

Hello trvlnmny,

You can try to deleting the SMART COLLECTION.
1. In the Collections tab of the Organizer Tree panel, click the plus button next to Smart Collections to display the list of saved searches.
2. In the Smart Collections list, right-click the search you want to delete, and choose Delete.

Abiel,
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately you have not made it clear to me why the 'search' starts as soon as I type the first letter of what I want to search for.
Can you clarify please? Thanks.

I think that's just the way the search engine functions. It's not much, if any, different than most current internet search engines, like Google or Yahoo. Start typing in a word and you can get real-time, instant results. However with some like Google, you do have the option to disable the instant results. In PSPP just keep typing in the keyword and it will return results based on that.

What I am finding is that I am only able to enter one or two letters at the most and the search begins. I am then locked out of entering any more letters.
Thanks

How fast do you type? Are you a touch typist or a letter searcher?

I find that if you type quickly you can actually get a whole sentence out before it starts searching. This is because it's not quite "instant" search. It waits until it thinks you've finished typing. This way if you're unsure you can type out a single word, wait, type in more to narrow it down, wait, and so on. So if you you're typing slowly that would explain why it's searching after only a few letters....if not and you're actually a quick typist then I 've got nothing at all.

Well....except for this.

One way to prevent this is to hit the eyeglass button next to the search textbox. Image

This Smart Collection Dialog will pop up. Image

Normally you'd use this dialog to make, well, smart collection folders. But you can use it to prevent instant searching. Now I don't know what all Instant Searching looks for. If it looks in EXIF information or not. But if you only need dates and names then the smart collection allows you to add a number of filters to make up your search.

All you have to do is hit the Preview button when you have all of your search parameters and the image area will update will all matching images. Hit "Cancel" on the smart collections dialog and the previewed search will remain where it is. So no need to actually create a smart collection and no need to wait for instant search to finish what it's doing. Especially on a computer with a large database of photos.

Does this help at all? Or is it too ridiculous of a method to work around your problem?

I guess it is a 'bug' in the product. I hope that someone from Corel monitors this group and begins to develop a fix for the problem.
As I mentioned previously I am using a manual to learn the product. It is a bit discouraging to be in the very early pages and begin to run into problems.
Thanks fore the help.

yes. Thanks for this answer.

Some years ago, I installed X2 (I think it was), and the first time I started it, it auto-annoyingly started searching my drive and displaying photos. It was offensive (to say the least) that the first photos it found AND DISPLAYED! were, well, offensive.

I could not quickly figure out how to disable that feature, and so I promptly uninstalled the product and reverted to an older version I had been using for years.

Anyway, I'm glad now to know how to disable "Smart Collections", and I would like to strongly urge you guys, before just willy-nilly searching for photos, that you display an initial dialog exaplaining what you are going to do and give the customer the immediate option of either controlling or althgether disabling the facility.

Thank you.

This forum is just a user to user forum. While there are occasional, informal visits from Corel people, this isn't a way to contact Corel. To do that you will need to go to http://support.corel.com and use the links there to contact them by phone or email.

A way, of sorts, around this is to copy & paste the search term using Notepad.
I have Notepad in the Start menu for easy access and use it for such things all the time.
Then you can enter the whole search term at once.
But as I said, it's a solution of sorts.
I don't use the Organizer, never have, in any version.
Too much hassle.
Organising myself using Windows Explorer is my preferred option.
