Avatar Blu-Ray not working on latest version

Post by JeffRandall »

A little while back my Windvd 2010 notified me that an update was available, so I went ahead and let it update. The version number is now Version: 10.0.5.703 Now, when I load my Avatar blu-ray, it says "Loading disc..." and then does nothing. Nothing I can do can get it to play the movie or go to the disc menu. It was working perfectly fine before the update. My other blu-rays are all working fine with it.

Is Corel aware of this issue? If so, when will a new upgrade be available. If they aren't aware of the issue, what's the best way to notify them?

As this is a User to User forum nobody here has any idea at all as to whether Corel are aware of this problem - and we all have even less idea as to if/when a patch or upgrade will be available - and even the odd person who may know is not going to release it here.

You can contact Corel customer services via the Corel website serving your particular part of the world.

Or else use System Restore to get back to the point before the update was made...

JeffRandall -

There have been a number of issues with Avatar in Blu-ray format, apparently related to changes in the encryption locks (DRM - Digital Rights Management). Check the firmware of your optical drive - it may be time to flash the drive if the manufacturer has posted a firmware upgrade for your model.

There is a workaround - AnyDVD HD by Slysoft:

http://www.slysoft.com/en/

AnyDVD HD supports Blu-ray and DVDs. A lifetime license is available through tomorrow, so if you are considering purchasing this software, now is the time to commit yourself. Exchange rates with the Euro are very favorable right now. Use of this powerful application presumes you have a bona fide exemption under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Hello JeffRandall,

This has been an issue with WinDVD Pro 2010, this has been addressed on this KB Article 764424 WinDVD® and Blu-ray title compatibility.

You just need to make sure that you download all updates from Sp1 to SP5 from this URL: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 5746622377.

Abiel,
I have uninstalled/reinstalled and applied all of the patches and upgrades numerous times. As I stated, the current version is 10.0.5.703, after I applied the SP5 patch called WinDVD_2010_Pro_Patch6_Nov.exe. It still doesn't work.

One other item I noticed is that when I look at the Region tab of the setup dialog, there is no region selected and all of the selections are greyed out. I think this might be related to the issue. Is there a way to enable the selections, so that I can select Region A?
Thanks, Jeff

You should be able to select a region in the optical drive. To do so, access the Device Manager > DVD/CD ROM Drives > Properties > DVD Region. If no region selection has been made, you may wish to leave things alone, because you cannot reverse a selection, and you are limited to a small number of selections.

Once again, I suggest you check out AnyDVD HD:

http://www.slysoft.com/en/

Today is the last day to purchase a lifetime license. AnyDVD HD will remove regional encryption locks on Blu-ray and DVD media. Works every time.

I solved the problem. A while back, I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. When I did this, windows removed the regi service from the system and marked it as LEGACY. This prevents Windvd from having a region defined. Uninstalling and reinstalling Windvd does not reinstall the regi service, when the LEGACY key exists.

In order to correct this, I uninstalled Windvd, and then used regedit to delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\regi key. After deleting the key, I reinstalled Windvd. This time the install prompted me for the region and I can now set the region using the setup option.

All of my Blu-Rays are working now, including Avatar. Apparently Avatar doesn't display a message when your region isn't correct, it just sits there at a black screen (which is why I originally thought the update to 703 broke it).

@nepenthe, no offense, but I'm not looking for a way to work-around DRM/region restrictions. I just want the product that I paid for, to work as advertised. I shouldn't have to resort to third party hacks.

No offense taken. 99% of WinDVD licensees wouldn't have your knowledge of registry tinkering to fix the glitch (that includes myself). AnyDVD HD worked perfectly for me (my Acer 1280x1024 monitor wasn't HDCP compliant). Yesterday I replaced the monitor with an NEC LCD monitor that features LED backlighting. So I no longer need AnyDVD HD.

I never deprived copyright holders a penny of their legitimate earnings, nor do I personally approve of circumvention software used for such piracy. But hardware incompatibilities are another story, and I must acknowledge that SlySoft has done an 'admirable' job supporting its products.

Glad you got things working. Wish I had your knowledge of registry tooling.
