Paintshop Photo Pro X3 Installation Wizard Hangs

Post by rtgrimesc230 »

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 with Vista Home Premium with SP2. I have the new Paintshop Photo Pro X3. I attempted to install from the CD and the initial banner loads with the three installs (Painshop Photo Pro X3, Paintshop Photo Project Creator, and Painter Photo Essentials 4). Clicking on any of the 3 installs the Installation Wizard starts up with a progress bar and the text "Please wait". Then the progress bar disappears and nothing happens. The installation window is now just black with no text or options and only Cancel button shows. There is an inactive "Next" button. The installation process just stops or hangs.

I did install on my other PC loaded with Windows 7 and all the programs installed perfectly. I have attempted more than 10 times on the other machine with the same hanging results.

I appreciate any assistance anyone can provide.

Go to the bottom entry on this page http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=38064 and click the link for the cleanup tool. You probably have a registry issue that the cleanup tool may resolve. Run it before trying your next install. You may just follow that last entry on that page for a total uninstall to start fresh.

If you have Vista's UAC active then you'll want to stop the service. Windows Key + R, type in 'msconfig', navigate to the tools tab, scroll down to Disable UAC and click on it, then click Launch. You'll need to log off then log on to take effect, a full restart is not needed.

You may want to disconnect from the internet and run the installer without any antivirus or spyware or firewall running.

When I installed X3 it took well over an hour for the installer to show much if any progress. The Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) did show the installer as using up CPU percentage though.

I am getting the exact same window which never progresses into the installation. The window is not hung as I can click the cancel button and it will abort by telling me to rerun the installation later. I have Win 7/64 and have the latest trial from a link a tech rep. gave me in a chat session. It installs on my laptop (WIn 7/64) but not the desktop where I want to try it out before purchase. I've tried the manual uninstall procedure found here using the 1.9 uninstaller and turned off the anti-virus and used Run as Administrator, but no go. I have the same AV on the laptop (Microsoft Security Essentials) but did not turn it off when installing there. Should I purchase the program first and then request installation assistance from Corel or has someone found a reliable way to work around this issue? Will Corel help me work through Trial installation issues? PSP XIII seems to be the best program to work with Kodak Z981 raw files, so need to persist until this is resolved.

Thanks all....

First thing to try is updating the NVIDIA video driver. See http://corel.custhelp.com/app/answers/d ... _id/758921

Thanks for the tip, Tim. I found that I had the latest video driver. On a hunch, I disabled the driver and tried the install using bare VGA. Still no good. I'm suspecting that it might be a permissions issue, but not sure where to look first. The installation extracts all the files to the temp area and runs setup.exe, but after that it goes no further. I've tried running the setup.exe file directly from the temp folder but no good either. I guess we'll eventually figure it out.

I have been testing this problem, which has appeared last week out of the blue on a few machines around the world, and I was not able to reproduce it. It seems to be a OS setting responsible that is related to a user profile. We're grateful to each idea!

This is the solution which worked fine until now:

Please create a new user account with full administrative rights, restart the machine and log in with the new user.

Install PSPPX3.

Afterwards, you can delete the new user and use PSPPX3 with your old account.

Thanks, Simone, it worked. I did it slightly differently in that I did not restart the machine, but merely switched users.

I had the same problem as rtgrimesc230 with installation of PSPx3 on a vista ultimate machine after successfully installing on my W7 machine. After trying all the above suggestions (which did not work), this is how I fixed it: After about the 10th attempt at installation I decided to open task manager when the installation got stuck at a certain percent. I noticed that in addition to the PSPx3 setup utility, PSP itself or one of its processess was also running. I terminated the PSP process and left the setup program alone, closed task manager and voila! My frustration was over, PSPx3 installed on the vista machine.

Hope this helps,

I see that this is an old problem, but I have just recently encountered it. A couple of weeks ago, Paintshop X3 partially broke out of the clear blue. When launched, it kept going into the organizer rather than the full editor and there was no way to switch. I could go to the express editor, but again... no way to get to the full editor. I finally uninstalled it with the idea of reinstalling to fix it. Big mistake as now I can not get it to reinstall. I am running into the black screen problem described in this post. I have read some of the other posts with additional fixes. I have removed every instance of Paintshop references and keys in the registry. I have disabled Vista's UAC, firewall, antivirus, run as admin logged in to main user account which has full admin privileges, logged in directly to full admin, and finally today reluctantly created a new user account will full admin privileges which is still giving me the same problem of this black screen with no license form.

Is there a fix for this?

I have an HP Pavilion dv-1232nr with 64-bit Vista Home Premium SP2 with all current Windows updates applied. Paintshop has never given me any problems up until now. I have no idea what could have broken it in the first place. I used it one night to edit a photo without any issues and when I launched it the very next day, it went into the organizer. I never even use the organizer so that was bizarre. I managed to get into the preferences and found that it was still set to launch in full editor mode. No matter what route I took to open Paintshop (open with from a photo or directly into the program) it still went into the organizer with no way to switch to the full editor. I really, really need to get this reinstalled!

Thank you!

Wow, I had hoped there was something new on this issue. I suppose most people have moved on to X6. I had hoped to also when I get a new computer with more memory, probably around August. Now, I'm having second thoughts. As much as I love Paintshop, I can't afford to have it randomly stop working like this. I have been trying different things as in my first post above, for about three weeks now. Nothing has worked. As of this morning, I also uninstalled Paint Photo Essentials 4 which I never used, thinking it might reset or get rid of something used both by it and Paintshop so then maybe it would reinstall. This is very frustrating. I have been doing a monthly article with an accompanied themed graphic created in Paintshop. It's almost June 1st and I can't create the special graphic for June. The effects I used don't exist in other graphic programs I currently have either. :x

If anyone knows of any other fix, I would really appreciate the help.

Thank you!

You could download and try the X6 trial and see if that works on your system. You woudl be able to use that for 30 days and see if you like it and also get your submission done. X3 was a change apart from X2 and the jasc versions and Corel has been slowly improving the programs and its stability .
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

That's actually a pretty good idea! Although I have seen a few posts here with people having trouble switching over from the trial to the full purchased version. Wouldn't matter in my case though, as the purchased X6 would be going on a different new computer so switching over wouldn't be an issue.

Good try!! I downloaded it and I'm one step further. I get the license agreement and click accept. The Next button becomes active and acts like it's responding to a click but it fails to go on to the next screen or installation. <sigh>

Are you installing the trial X6 on a new computer? What version or windows is the new computer running?

@MicheleM

The reason why PSPX3 and also X6 fail is that something in your system hinders to allow buttons to forward the command done with a click (1) and this is done with JavaScript. Often, this problem can be easily seen if you open Internet Explorer and go to http://www.bing.com. In 99.9% of all cases like yours, the picture/video doesn't show up, because it's loaded with Javascript. These customers never noticed that Bing problem, because they had never used IE, but any other browser.
The difference is that IE is a system browser and other programs make changes to IE/system.
I have no idea what program or setting it's in your case that causes the problem. It has something to do with java.
I did once a test and installed everything what one customer had (it wasn't much) and tried to reproduce the problem, but no success. I set up Java Runtime that nothing worked on my test system, not to mention that Bing/IE also didn't work, unfortunately, my PSP DVD still allowed to use the button.
Sorry I have spent not only hours but days finding the culprit.

Reinstall Windows, don't install anything else but PSP and it will work. I assure you!

(1) behind a click is always a simple command "when clicked than do that and that".
