editing

Post by capndan114 »

This is a “How To” question/problem. I am using VS 10 and I have successfully captured all the video needed for this project (DV format). My project is an interview where I used 2 cameras during the recording session. On one camera I used a microphone and I want to use that audio throughout the project for consistency. At the beginning of the session I recorded a timer from my laptop screen to better help me sync the video during editing. I placed one camera video on the video track and the other on the overlay #1 track. I moved the overlay clip so it matched the frame of the timer on the video track. The 2 tracks synched up perfectly. So….now I am scratching my head on how to cut back and forth from the second camera. I extracted the video track audio to the audio track thinking I could just cut the video track and the overlay track and slide the overlay track up to the video track. But, it won’t let me cut the overlay track. By the way, while not an expert,I am also not a first time user with the software as I have made a number of projects over the years. I know there has got to be a way; I just can’t seem to figure out how!!

Welcome to the forums, :)

VS 10 is not the ideal program for doing multi-camera editing. The main reason you discovered, being you can not cut clips on the overlay tracks. We tried to get that and some other things implemented in it, however they came about in later versions. There are some ways that might work, but they are to say the least a nightmare to keep everything in-sync. You would have to use your Chapter Markers as Cue Markers (that's about all they're good for anyway).

Edited...This is the generally idea, however after posting this I tried it in my VS 10, and didn't come up 100% in sync. Currently I don't have any 2-camera footage to really test this, so I just used the same clip. If things come out in sync, my video should look like a single clip. Anyway with the following in mind, and maybe someone else jumping in with a better method, it may happen for you.

First go through your video and mark each place that you would need to cut. Then the clip that normally would be in the overlay track, put in the main video track, then cut at your markers. Don't just start moving or deleting them.

Now also you will need to use the 2nd overlay track, basically what you're doing first, is using the main video track as a cutting track. So sliding everything down one track for placement, having Overlay track#1 empty to start with. Now before you move a cut clip, you need to replace it with a color clip from the Color Library, that is the exact duration of the clip that you are going to move or delete, it will act as a place-holder. Place the color clip in the main video track to the left of the clip you're going to move or delete. Once that is done, move your cut clip down to overlay track#1, straight down, don't move it left or right. The color clip then should allow things to line back up. Continue in this fashion until you have your clips cut and placed. Then finally, take your main video clip, in Overlay Track#2, and drag it up to the Main video Track, placing it to the left-most of all the color clips. Once that is done, delete the color clips.

Now you should have blank spaces between clips in the Overlay track, where you're cuts between cameras occur. Not easy to do this way, but it is about the only way I know of, to get around this limitation in VS 10.

There's one other solution, upgrade to VS X3, and this will be a lot easier.. ;)

Wow, Ron, talk about a quick reply!! Thanks. I'll give it a try but I think it might be pushing my organizational envelope!! I take it its way easier with X3, right? Also, I have VS 12, any help there? ( I know what you're thinking. Why use VS10 when I own VS12. Its because I had trouble capturing my anolog to digital video with 12 but no problem with 10 so I just stayed in 10!!).

I also use v10 to capture, but then I import the clips into X3 for editing.

Well, good golly.. :o , why the heck are you wanting to make things difficult? You can cut clips, apply transitions to clips, in the overlay tracks of VS X2? Just because you used VS 10 to capture, does not mean you have to use it to edit. Certainly would make things super simple compared to what you're doing with VS10.. ;)
