Encoder profiles - unable to save changes

Post by sgraham »

Happy Holidays to all! - X3 on Windows 7 (can replicate this on both Home Premium and Pro). I migrated from XP and am very very happy with the way X3 runs on Windows 7 but I am having a big problem. I had a library of customized Windows Media Encoder settings (different bit rates, frame sizes, etc.) for output as .WMV files. When I try to copy or customize any of the existing encoder profiles (which all work just fine) the system does not allow me to save. I have set full permissions for the logged user and made sure the directory is not read only. Any ideas welcome. Thanks! - Steve

Have you installed the Windows Media Encoder 9 series?

  I'm sorry, but I cannot understand what you are saying! I assume VX is Video Studio X3, but what does "can open encoder native" and "see it in the middleware" mean?

when you go through VX and ouput select custom then wmv you can open up the profile within VX (it 'sees' windows media encoder profiles. it does not recreate them it taps into windows media encoder through the backdoor of VX. they wrote a little code to do this that is the 'middleware'). To open it 'native' go to the program directly and open encoder. you can get to the profiles there too. this is a permissions issue not so much an application issue but I bet it is common to Windows 7.

Hello sgraham,

Opps... looks like I posted too fast! :)

Is this the screen or area on VS X3 that you are referring?

If so, can you tell me what happens on your end? Are you getting any error message?

you got it. the window on the left is actually the encoder window. now make a change to anything in encoder window or simply copy a profile and try to save it. i get access denied and messages related to a permissions type issue saving any new profile. this was happening back in vista but i never got a fix and as i was on xppro just kept on working and ignored up until now.

sgraham,

I was able to export the profile but I'm getting this error..

when I tried to copy and move the profile. I escalated this to our Tech Support to get some additional information. For the meantime, you can try using the export then import workaround.

hey thanks for that follow up. I tried to run this problem down when one of my editors got into it on Vista but switched him back to XP and moved on. Now it has reared its head again. Besides the multi-trim viewer (the killer part of killer app for this product) the .WMV integration and high quality output has made for the backbone of my business for six years (and 325+ copywrited movies) with the product. I have not had time to continue drilling down to solve this problem. I was going to tap someone much smarter to look into the permissions. When I researched this during the Vista problem I came to find a lot of people having trouble with Encoder on Vista. I remain unsure if Microsoft is trying to push everyone to Expression by way of shutting down functionality or if this is OS related/permissions since I just upgraded all our systems to Win7. Incidentally, having rendered for six years I can say the Win7 with VX was a religious experience. It is cutting 10+ times faster on a quad core with 8Gig. thanks again for stepping in. look forward to seeing if you get help from the tech support source. - Steve

I too came from ULead VS versions to Corel.

I initially experienced the same “access denied” when trying to create WMV profiles within VSX2 and windows Vista.

I did post a work-around (solution) to this forum some time ago, but since the forum changed format the solution became like reading Hieroglyphs (garbled).

I worry about posting solutions again as perhaps “COREL” don`t want you to be able to create wmv profiles?

So I am interested enough to post in view of what information “Abiel Corel NA” may add “officially”.

After all I can always PM you my solution if applicable to W7 and X3.

There is absolutely no reason at all why Corel would not want your to create WMV profiles, so please feel free to post your solutions here. Corel itself rarely visits, and Abiel is only a very recent addition to the help pool. Moreover, as sgraham has himself put it, this problem seems to be more associated with Windows itself, rather than with Video Studio specifically...

I'll just add, a yes please post the solution. I know this is attributable to the security provided on Vista and probably Win7 too. I've been frustrated when trying to create new WMV profiles and it takes some serious digging to find the solution. It could be copied or posted in the General help as a sticky post.

righto. by all means post the solution (or was that the export method you described?). holistically this is a big buzz kill if you are trying to avoid generation loss. For me to go straight out of VX to Encoder makes much more sense than hitting an output file with a converter. And, after seeing I had no control over my burn speed (like to burn at 4x much better quality control) in making DVDs I am not suprised nobody from Corel haunts here much.

The problem appears to be with the folder where those profiles are located. Since you cannot specify the folder when you copy or save a new profile the folder restriction will then kick in and gives you that error message.
