Video Capture Studio 11
I have Studio 11 installed on a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium, and I have a Canon Elura 60 Camcorder. I read on another post that Studio 11 and Windows 7 are not compatible, but I have been able to create and edit video. The problem I am writing about concerns capturing video from the camcorder. The computer has no firewire connection, and the camcorder downloads using firewire. I bought a cable with firewire at one end and USB at the other. The computer responds when I connect and turn on the camcorder, but Studio 11 tells me no device is connected. Anyone have a suggestion as to how I can capture video using this setup?

Hi Diane
Welcome to the forums
First I do not have VS 11 nor run W7.
I am aware however that VS11 does have some capture problems,
Unfortunately not having used the program I don’t know the details of the problem.
Others on the forum will I am sure explain further.
Does W7 come with a Movie Maker that will allow you to capture your footage,
Or indeed any other program that you can use to upload your video.
There is a free program called WinDV used for DV capture, but I don’t know if it is limited to firewire or whether it works with USB, maybe worth a try?
Once captured you simply import/insert the video to VS11 timeline and edit.
Otherwise consider purchasing a firewire adapter for the laptop

Re: Video Capture Studio 11
If you're not able to get the Win7 version of Movie Maker to capture via USB, you will need to purchase a firewire adapter for your laptop. VS 11 has problems with capturing via USB, on the operating systems it was designed to work on. Now to complicate matters, throwing Win7 into the mix.
WinDV probably will not work, because it will not see the USB, and it looks for and only uses Firewire. Even though you start from your camcorder with Firewire, at the computer end, it is a USB port, so that is what the programs will see and use or not use.
I have a similar issue, as my old Sony DCR-TRV120, uses firewire, and my laptop, like most laptops nowadays do not have firewire ports. My remedy is, I still have my old desktop, which is about 6yrs old now, and does have firewire ports. So I use it to capture video from my camcorder. If I want to edit on my laptop, I just copy the files via my home network, to my laptop, or I use one of my external HDDs. I mainly store my captured clips on one them so to use it on my laptop, all I must do is plug that into my laptop.

Regarding Windows 7 and Movie Maker, because of the legal problems Microsoft has had in the past with including some of its modules in the operating system, this time round they have made them optional extras which you have to look for and download separately from their website. It comes now as part of a package called "Windows Live" and the actual program is now called Windows Live Movie Maker...

Hello dlane56,
You are correct VS 11 is not compatible with Windows 7, that alone can cause multiple numbers of problem with your VS11, but since the problem with the Capture feature, the problem can also be caused by the firewire driver is not recognize by VS 11 that is why it cannot detect it. To validate this, you can download the trial version of VS X3 from http://www.corel.com/trials, and try to capture a video using the same camera and firewire connection. From there you will know the answer.

Re: Video Capture Studio 11
One little problem with that Abiel, the OP's laptop does not have a firewire port. He is using a Firewire-->USB device. The USB plugs into his laptop, the Firewire into his camcorder.

I would really like to know more about this cable you have Diane - is it just a cable with a firewire connector at one end and a USB connector at the other ?? - if so there is now way that is going to work - the protocols and technologies are different and it cannot be done like that, does your cable have some sort of box in the middle that could contain some electronics - if yes does that box have any name or numbers on it ?
