Overlay track in VS 8.
Is it possible to MOVE an overlay clip in VS 8 from left of screen to right or vice versa while keeping the overlay clip ON SCREEN in pic in pic mode ? the presets in VS8 provide only off screen to on screen; on screen to off screen etc but do not provide the option of on screen to on screen.

I am surprised that the overlay feature has not aroused interest. Perhaps the members have not understood the feature. It allows picture in picture mode and allows one video clip to move over another video clip playing in the foreground. The problem is that VS8 provides pre-set movements of the overlay clip over the first video but allows no modification. I want the overlay to move from one end to the other end of screen without going off the screen. any idea how this may be done ???drvbmathur wrote:I am still hoping someone would be using overlay mode often in VS 8 and have experience with it sufficient to help me. Any help ??

Hi,
I am new to this and was playing around with the overlay track and the only thing I could think of was to put your movie or pic in there, have it remain static, adjust timing, place next clip in, adjust where it sits on video track (having it remain static), adjust timing and so on.....
Don't know if it would look choppy doing this ....
Hope you understood what I was talking about.
Good luck
Kim

The only workaround I can think of is to first use one of the options which starts on screen in the position you want it and then moves across the screen and right off. then go to "Share >> create video file " and make an .avi file of that sequence. Import your new .avi file back into your project and edit it to remove the last part from where the moving picture has reached what you wish to be the final position. Then edit the rest of your video around it to cover the join as it were.
I think we all know and understand what you can do with the overlay track - just that no-one knows how to do exactly what you want in one easy step.

My grateful thanks to Brian and Kimk for their help. I was already trying on the lines of what Kimk suggests but it is hard work and the results are difficult to achieve. Brian's suggestion again involves very hard work and may or may not work.
I was just thinking whether this forum or another platform exists where we can suggest to ULEAD some refinements and improvements in their VS 8 in the form of an upgrade or patch. I am sure its not difficult for them to include another option in their menu. How can we make a forceful suggestion to ULEAD ? And in your experience, do they take notice and do they listen ??

Glad you asked, joosuna. The Pinnacle Studio software versions 8 onwards have the feature and they work beautifully well. the Pinnacle softwares are the best in the class, cost under 100 Dollars and in many ways are the pioneers of video editing in the form in which others have developed. the only reason one prefers VS 8 is because it is simpler and quicker for non-professional users like me because as Studio becomes more efficient, it becomes bigger and complex.
The good part about VS 8 is that it is coming up very close to STUDIO now and competes with Studio 9 and Studio plus. I think therefore that ULEAD would appreciate us if we suggest modifications which help them to rise one step further.

Just wanted to put in my two cents re:Pinnacle Studio...
I had been a long time Pinnacle user, and turned out some decent projects. However, the program had an awful track record re: crashes, conflicts, out of sync errors, and all around bad behavior. It was pretty common to get a project almost to the end, then have the program suffer some horrible fate; it would take days of work, with multiple trips to the Pinnacle users forum, to fix these issues...Take a look at the strings on the Pinnacle webboard for an idea of some of these issues
IMHO, while Pinnacle does have clear advantages over UVS8 (faster rendering, locking of tracks...), the tradeoff in stability makes UVS8 a much better project. Video editng takes long enough; to spend hours just fixing a program to me means it's really not worthy of my time or money.

Thanks to you both, ericlast and drvbmathur. You both gave good insight as to the "good" and "not so good" of both video editing software programs of Pinnacle Studio and VideoStudio. It is good to hear from the users of the two programs who can give objective evaluations based on experience. I appreciate that and am sure other readers of this board do so as well.

I'm glad a healthy discussion ensued.
I agree with ericlast's analysis but wish to assure him that Studio, with its versions 9 and Studio Plus got rid of many of its shortcomings and has evolved as a strong and robust programme now although it remains more complex to use than VS8. Wish VS 8 would introduce some of the nicer and stronger features of Pinnacle! I would then stick to VS8 instead of keeping both on my hard disc !!!
Thanks jasoona for your thanks. Wish we could present a wish list of features to ULEAD. Anyone knows how to do that ?
