How Do I Fade Out A Audio Clip Completely

Post by Tony S »

Hi,
I hope everyone here is having a excellent holiday season. The reason that I am here today is to see if someone could give me a little advice on how to fade the volume out completely at the end of a audio clip. I have read the manual on the subject and have tried to follow the instructions that it gives. Until now I have not had any success. I know that I am missing something I just don't know what it is. I would like the audio to fade out completely so that I can fade in to another audio clip. I have clicked the fade out tabs but the volume only decreases a little at the end of the clip. Can someone help? :(

Thanks,
Tony S.

Hi Tony

From Preferences you can change the audio Fade durations.
They default as 1 second, I usually set to 3 seconds

There are fade ramps adjacent to the digital clock as image below

Tony,
Thought I'd mention this because it took a while for me to figure this out...
If you've changed the volume either in options or by dragging the rubber band in the Sound Mixer then I don't believe you can get a smooth fade-out.
I know I couldn't. Reset the volume to "100" and you should get a complete fade without an abrupt ending.

I have also found the problem that Caimen1 describes, that once you change the volume screwy things happen. However, if you change the volume back to 100, then apply your fade, then re-adjust your volume, all the changes stick. In other words, make all your fade adjustments before you adjust the volume.

Jeff,

Does the screwy things show in the wave-form/rubber-band? Or is it just happening behind the scenes?

No, the wave form will show it fading out, but it doesn't fade all the way, as Tony and Caimen1 have described. Or sometimes if I create a longer fade it will revert back to the default fade.

I can confirm what you are finding -- I battled some while ago with trying to get a fade to zero on a clip and discovered it doesn't work if you have raised the overall volume level well above 100. The rubber band display shows the fade is there, but the maximum diminution it can apply is not enough if the basis volume has been boosted, and so the sound stops suddenly. Just wondering: if you cut the clip which has a set volume >>100, a little before the end, set the volume to 100 for the second clipped portion and fade that out; also, fade out the first clipped portion, with a little experimentation you might be able to get a smooth fade and keep the enhanced volume level for most of the scene.
