VX3 creating two movies

Post by Bradley B »

Hello folks!

I am new to your forum here since I recently purchased the VX3/PSX3 bundle. So far we love the flexibility and ease of creating a project. We do a lot of transfering, such as 8mm and VHS for family and friends. Our most recent project included five 20 minute reels of 8mm film. The finished project with menus and credits was just about 1 hour 58 minutes with a size of 6.6GB. We have a a Blu-Ray burner as well as a DL DVD burner so that size should be fine since we were going to just make a DL DVD. I then went to the SHARE tab and selected the "Create a movie" link. I chose the mpg option just out of familiarity. All went well until I noticed that it broke my project into 2 seperate movies (movie.mpg and movie001.mpg). The first was a bit larger than the second, but almost equal in time. I thought maybe I did something wrong and reran it. The second try yielded basically the same result...two movie files, but this time the second was only 9 minutes long while the first was 1 hour 48 mins. This is driving me crazy, since I do not want the extra links on the DVD Menu. The cousin that this is going to is NOT very electronics savvy and the extra buttons on the menu may cause a complete mental breakdown. Anyone have an idea on how I can keep this 6.6GB project as one complete file for DVD authoring? I can forward along file info if need be when I get home. I am at work at the moment and figured I would ask, hoping that it was something simple I was overlooking.

Thanks in advance for the wonderul help that I am about to receive. Also, I am sorry if this is addressed in another thread, but I looked as long as I coud while here at my desk!

Hi

Video Studio X3 came with an authoring program Movie Factory 2010. this program is pretty poor to say the least.
Basically do not use Factory 2010.

Corel in recognition of their mistake have provide DVD Movie Factory 7SE as a replacement.
The program being available as a free download to X3 owners.

Using X3 you complete your project by Share Create Video-DVD this will create a single mpeg 2 file of your project. (6Gb or so)

Using DVD Movie Factory 7SE you select the type of disc to burn
Next
add the Mpeg 2 file
Create a menu.
In the lower left hand corner is an option to select the disc type, choose DL as 8.5GB.

Welcome to the forums,

In the Share step, you stated that you selected the mpeg out of familiarity. Did you select the MPEG Optimizer? If so that tells me that the clip in your project is an MPEG file, however I'm guessing that it is.
The finished project with menus and credits was just about 1 hour 58 minutes with a size of 6.6GB.
Did you jump from the editor (VS X3) straight into the DVD authoring program, which in this case can only be DVD Factory 2010, using your project file? In VS X3 you can not create DVD Menus. Also with the terrible DVD Movie Factory 2010, you have very little control over some settings. The best that you could do is lower the bitrate, which is somewhat difficult to find where that is done, it does not mention that the numbers shown is the bitrate. The program just stinks on ice.

Better to first create a video file, Share>Create VIdeo File>DVD>NTSC.. Then you need to download and install the free DVD authoring replacement, DVD MovieFactory 7SE. Once installed, fire it up, and insert your newly created video file and then make sure to select DVD 8.5 from the menu located in the lower right. BUT, the program will split the video where it wants to, not necessarily where you want it to.

All the above is based on a guess as to what you're doing.. Please provide us with more detail so we can steer you down the right path.. ;)

Please Read this Before Posting, is a sticky located at the top of this forum. It will provide you with an outline of what information we need to better help you.

Merry Christmas!!

I new I took too long to type this.. ..

Ron and Trevor,

Thanks for the reply. I had already been using DVD Movie Factory 7 SE that I downloaded from Corel as a patch to VX3. I am sorry if I confused you with my wording of my problem. My problem is when I create my movie from within VX3, and yes I am making mpg's, it is creating two movies instead of one from my single project. I am not sure of any other way to word this. So my issues are not with DVD Movie factory. It is with VX3 cutting my movie export into multiple files.

Thanks again!

Hi Bradley

I’m a little confused, unfortunately I don’t have access to X3 to view the options.

I assume you to be using the advanced editor.
To complete your project you should select the Share Tab-Create Video File-DVD
This creates a new Mpeg2 file.
Share Create Disc Movie Factory 7SE option will close X3 and open 7SE
Here you select to create DVD then in the second window you add the new mpeg2

Is that the route you have taken?

Or are you using another editing option like Easy Edit?

Did you actually burn the movie and see two buttons on the menu? I have not used a DL DVD, but it is my understanding there is a "break" from layer 1 to layer 2. Are you sure the splitting of your video file is not the result of the authorer creating your two layers?

Hi Jeff

I have just started using Duel Layer and there is no break between layers, its just like using a single layer except it holds 8 Gb

When we burn a DVD the Mpeg2 file is converted into Vob files at 1 Gb each and saved to a Video-TS folder
A Duel Layer just has twice as many Vob’s.

That's my understanding too, that DL discs are real different than Dual-sided discs. The latter would indeed have to split them so you could flip the disc over. However at some point the player would need to stop playing layer-1 and start playing layer-2. I think in the past, people were experiencing glitches with this, that the authoring program did not produce the best change in the layers.

I too still am confused as to how or why VS would be splitting the clips. I've never seen this. I've not tried experimenting with the duration setting in the Options dialog of the Save as.. when you render a video file. So I'll ask... did you enter a specific duration here?

No I have not messed with the set durations. I found it odd that both attempts to create the movie within VX3 have yielded different movie times when the program split them. The first try was just about 1 hour each, while the second attempt was 1:48 to 0:09. Please keep in mind that I am noticing that VX3 has split my project into 2 movies PRIOR to ever "needing" to mess with DVD authoring. So the DL DVD option doesn't come into play yet. I was just giving that information so you folks knew that I could burn the larger file size to one disc.

Thanks again for all the input!

Yes, this is the course that I have taken to create my video file. I notice that two movies are created within my save folder. One is defintely the beginning of my project while the other has the ending. I have used the DVD Movie Factory 7 to create the menus, but I have not attempted to actually burn the disc yet, since the preview generated by shows the extra movie as its own selection. I had tried to just add the second movie to the DVD at the end of the first and it shows it on the menu, which I strongly do not want.

Thanks!

Ok, one thing I am seeing in the options once I chose Share-Create Video File-DVD...I see NTSC for DVD and for MPEG2. I assumed that since I was going to use the video on a DVD, that I should pick that one. Am I mistaken? Should I chose MPEG2?

hi

Choose the DVD option, This creates a Compliant Mpeg2 file, suitable for burning a disc

Hi

Are you saying this process creates two Mpeg2 files.

A thumbnail of the new video file is placed in the library.
View this to see if its complete.
Right click the thumbnail and select properties, how long is it.
You came play the clip from the library or timeline.

Yes. It creates TWO MPEG2 files in my save folder. One is the beginning of the project and the other is the end. One is named movie.mpg and the other is movie01.mpg. I have not checked the library. I will when I get home. Regardless, it should still be correct within my save folder.
