Audio choppy and distorted on playback

when i have on my timeline more than 1 audio track playing at the same time, the result is the audio sounds choppy and distorted. but when i playback just one audio clip it is fine. any help?

What type of audio? What type of video clips? Any effect applied to either? The reason I ask is because when you are playing in Project Mode everything is being processed on the fly, so more compressed or difficult file types may cause problems.

sometimes it's a mixture between .wav and .mp3 playing at the same time, and the video clips are .avi. I generally apply only a lens flare and some colour correction and thats about it.

I'd get rid of the p3 and only use wav/wma files.
What sort of avi?
What are your project settings?

project settings:

NTSC non-drop frame (30 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 30 fps
Lower Field First
Xvid MPEG-4 Codec
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit

my avi has been rendered with the xvid codec as said above
