How do I author an HD DVD?

Post by fuzzyfreak »

OK, so I have my brand new Sony HD 1080 5.1 video camera, I download the video files to my laptop and convert them using PMB to Mpeg2. I create my Ulead Video project then I am a little confused. I can't seem to use the "Create Disk" option without it forcing me to use a menu, but having problems with this in the past I have always used a 3rd party program for this, so presently I am using DVD Flick. I exported my project to a 1080 format Mpeg (I forget the name) and author my DVD-R. The result is poor quality and the sound is at least two seconds out of sync!

Going back to the "Create Video File" option, which option do I export to?
Can I assume that I also need HD DVDs for it to remain true HD?

thanks

What model of Sony HD camcorder? Is it a mini-DV? Does it record using AVCHD, or HDV? Makes a difference on what you choose to create your video file.

Hi Ron, thanks for your reply. I don't have it in front of me at the moment but it records in AVCHD.

Hi

High Definition.

Bluray is full HD, you need Bluray discs, a Bluray burner, and a Bluray DVD player.

However:-
You can create hybrid discs, these are standard DVD holding AVCHD video.
You can use your standard DVD burner to create the discs, but need a Bluray DVD player to play the discs, otherwise play them on the PC.

There is some good info here regarding video types

Otherwise you can make standard DVD discs.
These use Mpeg2 files at 4.3 Gb

What version of Video Studio are you using?
If X3 then to complete the project Share-Create Video File DVD
The resultant file being used in DVD Movie Factory 7SE to burn a disc, this program is a free download for X3 owners.
Do not use Corel Factory Pro 2010.

PS what’s PMB???????

Thanks Trevor.

I am using Ulead Video Studio Version 11. I just really need to know which video format to create to retain the AVCHD format created by the camcorder.

PMB is Sony's Picture Motion Browser Software - http://www.sony.co.uk/hub/cyber-shot-di ... b-software

Hi Tim

I do not use VS 11 and therefore do not know how it handles AVCHD.

I do know that HD video can be very demanding on the pc, you still haven’t given any details of your specification.

Video Files Properties:-
With a video clip in the timeline, right click and select properties, these are the video files properties, but if you have converted using PMB they could be anything, not necessarily the original cameras files.

From Share Create Video File, if the option to save “Same as First Video Clip” is available, will use your video files properties to create a new file.

Trevor thanks for your reply,

The original camera files are m2ts files, I then use PMB to convert these to MPEG2 so that I can edit them in Video Studio - I am assuming the MPEG2 files retain all the quality of the original m2ts files - do you know of a video editing package that'll read m2ts files?

When right clicking on the file in the timeline and selecting properties, it says -

Video Type: MPEG-2 Video, Upper Field First
Attributes: 24bits, 720 x 576, 16:9
Frame Rate: 25 per/s
Data Rate: 9000 kbps
Audio Type: Dolby Digital
Attributes: 48000hz, 5.1 Channels
Later: None
Bit Rate: 448kbps

I do have the "Same as first video clip" option - do you think this is the best option to retain the quality?

Thanks

VS11+ could handle AVCHD files, but only when fully patched so that it became VS11.5+. However, AVCHD is the format which is most demanding of computer resources, just to play it smoothly, not to mention editing it... (Note that if you have VS11 without the + sign, you will not be able to use AVCHD...)

However, we have no idea what you computer specifications are. It would be useful if you filled in your Profile with those details. But unless the computer is at least a decent Core 2 Duo, or preferably a Quad or higher, then you will not be able to play AVCHD smoothly.

You seem to be also making a mistake converting to mpeg-2 using PMB as that is giving you standard definition video, and you will thus suffer significant loss of quality from the original. Moreover, using 'Same As First Video' is only going to give you more standard def video since your first video is standard definition!

Your better option would be simply to insert your original AVCHD video from the camera into VS11/11.5+ and, depending on your computer resources, use SmartProxy. That will create proxy copies of the original video, but do so in standard definition mpeg-2 which is easier to edit. When editing is complete, the edits are than applied automatically to the AVCHD original video...

The only other way I can think of to do it would be to convert your AVCHD original into HDV format i.e. high def mpeg-2. This should maintain the high quality of the original, but be easier to edit, even on less powerful computers.

Hi Kevin thanks for the info, I think the answer might be to patch up so that my version can edit AVCHD and see if my laptop can handle it.

Spec: Dual Core 2.2Hhz, 3gb RAM - Windows XP.

I am running Ulead Video Studio Version 11.0.0157.0 Plus

Problem is, I downloaded both the English Power Pack and Update Pack from here -

http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 8716781313

and when I run them, they both say "Installer cannot find Ulead Video Studio 11 on your machine"

Thanks

Trialing the software first would have taken out the guess work.

To be honest Jeff, it said it was compatible with my type of files and it is a familiar interface, I am not sure I could therefore be persuaded to any other software.
