Possible to use DVD Factory Pro 2010 w/o metadatamgr.exe?

Post by jlig »

As a longtime user of Video Studio, X3 Pro is a much-improved version for editing and well worth the cost to upgrade. But as everyone else has RIGHTLY posted, the DVD option is so bad that my 12 year daughter even said so. I went ahead and installed the MF7se option and it works ok, just a shame that it is not really "Integrated" into the X3 program like X2 Pro was.

So heres my question: Is there any way to get rid of the metadatamgr.exe program and just use the new Burning Features/Templates/Etc?
I have a Quad-Core processor, 4 gig of RAM, and Terabytes of hard drive space and if I dare open up the DVD Factory, the metadatamgr.exe program takes over my computer/resources, trying to index my whole system I guess? If the metadatamgr.exe program could be turned off, disabled, killed, burned at the stake, or sent to a black hole somewhere, the program might be usable..?

ps: If I kill the metadatamgr.exe process in Task Manager, it keeps coming back to life like a bad dream.. and the only way to get rid of it is to reboot!
No wonder the DVD Factory Pro 2010 program keeps crashing, very poor design & thought. My daughter said, Dad, you need to get a newer, faster computer.. I guess I need a Pentagon Power PC..

The fix might be to have Corel add a Preference setting checkbox: Use MetaDataManager: Yes or No (I would definitely check the NO box!)

Thanks,

Hello jlig,

I'm glad that you liked the VideoStudio Pro X3, regarding your question about the metadatamgr.exe. At this time, there is no way to stop opening the metadatamgr.exe without affecting your DVD Movie Factory 2010, since the metadatamgr.exe is a component DVD Movie Factory 2010. However, if you are still experiencing problem with the metadatamgr.exe, you may want to try resetting the program by follow the steps from this KB Article: http://corel.custhelp.com/app/answers/d ... _id/763996, then follow the steps for Vista, since Windows 7 and Vista has the similar file structure.

Abiel, Thanks for the helpful link.. sadly I deleted the folders/files and still unable to use the DVD Factory 2010 program..
Here is my testing scenario:
- I created a small 5 minute video in VSX3 using the Wizard/Create Project
- Then clicked Share/Create Disc/DVD Factory Pro 2010
- The DVD app opened (after 1.5 min), I changed the template to the closeline theme, then clicked Go to Menu Editing
- I clicked on Add More Text, nothing happens? I clicked Soundtrack/Add Music/Browse (after 3 min) the program crashes?
- Anytime I save the Disc Project, it is nowhere to be found in Projects? (always have to start from scratch)
- If I do make it to the Burn stage, it crashes less than half way thru? or takes forever, if ever (have to end the task)

Anxiously looking forward to a patch release to resolve these issues..
ps: The Menu templates are excellent and if the program actually worked it could be a nice addition to the VSX3 editor

Thanks again, jlig

Hmm... perhaps but unlikely... There are just so many things wrong with DVD Factory 2010, apart from the hubris of its calling itself "Pro"! First, it is incredibly slow. Second, it does not allow burning of discs without menus... These are two major strikes against it. Then, of course, there is the metadata manager takeover bid!!
if the program actually worked it could be a nice addition to the VSX3 editor.
If so, you would be the first user I have heard say that. Hopefully, Corel will instead forget about it entirely and bury it!!!

But certainly don't expect any patch for it. Instead, download and use its substitute: Movie Factory 7 SE... which was released by Corel precisely to make up for the awful mistake they made in using DVD Factory 2010!!!

Ken, thanks for the input and I have always appreciated your excellent help..

First, regarding DVD Factory 2010, I did make some progress and have actually been able to "use" the program to make/burn a DVD successfully.
- After deleting all of the folders mentioned in the link above, I also deleted the Corel DVD Factory folder at this location: "C:\..AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel DVD Factory\2010 (It was not in the link above so I was originally afraid to delete)
- Once I deleted this folder, as well as all the others again, the program started running much faster & actually "functioned" from start to finish?
- It also saved my Project, I could re-open it ok, I could access my Music Library ok, and the Video/Picture Library Manager is finally responsive!

I'll hold my breath on how it will handle a full 4gig project though.. if it crashes again, I'm through with it..

Second, I must confess that I'm a long-time user of DVD Workshop 1.0/2.0 and only at VSX2 Pro did I slowly start to move away from it.
It always worked flawlessly, it was never sluggish, it gave me complete control over the Menu creation, and it worked well with Photoshop & Impact..
I was really saddened when Corel (or Ulead) killed off future development..

Third, I was also a long-time user of MediaStudio Pro 5/6/7/8 and hated to see it also come to an end. It will not even install on my new Windows 7 64-bit system so it is gone for good in my case.

In conclusion, I do think Corel should re-focus on the DVD burning software & take the best features of DVDWS, VSX2 burning & DVD Factory and include it in a tightly integrated version of VSX3/4? I would also certainly be interested (and willing to pay) for a higher-end DVDWS 3.0 that fully integrates with VSX3/4..

ps: The only reason I say I "like Corel DVD Factory 2010" is that it includes some fresh DVD menus.. I really like the Clothes-line theme.. I do have the full Movie Factory 7 as well..

Thanks again,
jlig
