I too had dealings with NB tech support after Light Rays started causing VSX3 to crash. The support rep responded withing 24hrs stating he had followed my steps and was able to re-create the error.
I was impressed. About 5 days later I had a new build and it is all working again.
Can't remember the last time I had such a quick turn around for a software patch.

I am jealous of your purchase Black Lab. I was just looking at an email from NB before coming here and wondering if I could sneak the purchase of VE IV without the boss seeing.
I'd have to buy her some actions for her PhotoShop as a distraction.

Cheers

I just finished up a highlight video for a high school football team and used a few of the effects from VE IV. They turned out great.

Jeff,

So what did you do to get this working? I just purchased V.E. IV, installed it on both my Vista and XP machines. All versions of VS on my WinXP machine crash when launching them. On my Vista machine they seem to work fine. Down side is, I need it more on my XP machine.

I took up their special offer of all four Video Essentials packages, plus the audio packages plus the lightning effect as a freebie (US$240). But I have not yet installed tham. Will let you know what happens on Win 7...

For me, the Drop Shadow fx is the one that causes the crash. If I remove that one from the vfx folder, VS and the other fx work fine. I have been working with their support staff for a fix, although I haven't been able to lately because I was working on some projects and couldn't take the time for reinstalls. I should be able to get back to it this week. If I were you I would also contact them and let them know of your problems.

I've submitted a ticket to New Blue, and I've removed the Drop-shadow VFT file, but the FX/Filter does not show up in VS. I've reinstalled VS X3 (I've narrowed down the install to just VS X3 and MSP8), numerous times, removing the drop-shadow vft file before launching VS, and also after. I clearly see the problem you were having with this. I've uninstalled, re-boot, install, done about everything short of booting the PC out the window.

So what was the magic bullet that got you to where you could use it (with the exception of the drop shadow)?

As I said, it's been a while since I've dealt with this, and I've tried so many different ways, but I think what worked for me was not using the NB installer. You obviously now have the vft folder with all the fx in, including NB. Make a copy of that folder, or at least the NB vft files (excluding the Drop Shadow). Now reinstall X3 and copy those vft files into the vft folder. Open X3 and the NB IV menu should be there with the fx available. (I think :? )

Not working here. NB also sent me a "beta" version that they say is newer. Tried that, still same results. First launch VS, it crashes. I can then immediately re-launch it and the filters are not there, even though they are in the VFT folder. I'm like you Jeff, I have uninstalled/reinstalled, rebooted so many times I lost count.

What is real, real, real, puzzling, is that I have not had a lick of trouble with the filter and MSP8, which of course is a Ulead product. But I will also say, when I first installed the filter to my system, I allowed it to install to all my VS versions, which include older Ulead VS versions, those would also crash, and the filter would not work in them.

I wonder if they have a money-back guarantee, I may give up and see if I can get a refund. Between NB and Corel's B.S. this is pure ridiculous. I never have had any trouble with the Light Rays plug-in.

Ok, not giving up yet. NB replied to my reply to them, and real fast!! Something that Corel should take notice of... ;) One thing that I was told, to delete the "13.0" folder from the My Documents folder, which apparently clears the cache. However that did not work. I'm now wondering if I may have to remove all the older Ulead VS versions.

Another question, did you allow or install the filter to any older VS versions you may have installed? At first I did, but since I've been having the problems getting it to work in VS X3, I've not allowed it to install to my older ones.

I've also checked MSP 8 that is installed on my Vista machine, and the filter works fine there. MSP 8 of course is not even suppose to run properly on Vista, but it has not had a single issue, on Vista or WinXP, with it running all the NB filters. I've even copied the "vft" files from the filters that came with VS12 into MSP 8, and they work without problems.

The only other versioin of VS on this machine is 10, and I did install to that too, and of course had the same problem. I really wasn't worried about that though, because I don't use it for editing, only capturing.

I've uninstalled all versions of VideoStudio except VS X3, still have the same problem. I've tried every combination possible. I've done a screen capture of the problem and what I do. I've forwarded this to NewBlue and Corel.

I am rather nervous in all the circumstances -- though personally happy and relieved -- to report that I finally got around to installing and activating all four of the Video Essentials packages. And all of them, including the dread Drop Shadow in Essentials IV, work without causing any crashes. Mind you, I will need to do a bit more tinkering to see how to get Drop Shadow to work properly. I haven't managed to get it to show a drop shadow in anything yet, though I have fiddled with the various knobs, including on one of my more difficult AVCHD files, and VS has remained stable and working.

So it looks indeed as though Ron's problem is XP-specific.

I have also installed the three audio packages, though I as yet don't have the faintest idea of how to get them working in VS!

EDIT: found the New Blue audio filters, though at first glance they can only be applied to added audio, not the audio stream embedded in the video.

New Blue has submitted it to their development team to figure out why this is happening. I've had 6 email exchanges with them in the last 24 hrs, and 0 with Corel.

Ken, it may be helpful if you could contact NewBlue support and let them know your success. Maybe they would want some of your info to compare with ours.
